Because RL on a saturday is FoxSports cash cow.

Without that, PayTV in Australia has no chance of making money anytime in the near future.

Ratings for FTA tv on sat aren't huge. Friday & Sunday games are the so-called matches of the round, meaning that saturday games can sometimes be not so appealing to the wider audience, unless you have an interest in a side playing, or have no friends. This is why you always see sides like Melbourne copping the saturday evening slot so much - they don't pull ratings.

Also, live footy punctuated by ads is a pain in the rear, and Nine cannot adevrtise as much as they would normally.

Doesn't make for an attractive option for the FTA networks.

Fox pays good bucks for Saturday night footy. It's about the money.

In Brisbane, they show the Broncos' Saturday games late at night, and I think it's the same with North QLD and the Cowboys' games, but they only do it in one team towns.

Better than nothing.

Lets also not forget that Foxtel pays the NRL considerable money for the exclusive Sat
Night games....

If a FTA network wants to outbid them,I don't think the NRL is gunna say no...

I suspect 9 have left Saturday nights free so they can have a spot to show AFL when they bid for the rights.

If 7 get the AFL rights 9 will be screwed on Saturday nights. They could try and buy Iron Chef off SBS and let Chairman Kaga take out his wrath on the AFL in Sydney.

Here in Canberra, both Nine and Ten show AFL games around midnight on Sat and Sun. No-one must watch them, but they show them anyway.

Hardly see how that could eat into Fox's audience if they did it with League - might even be a teaser, make people sign up to see them at a decent hour.

Yeah i dont know about these TV Rights but all i know if live in Central Queensland the heartland of Rugby League. We get 4 games of AFL yet 2 games of Rugby League. Sounds weird to get that much afl. But brissy get the brisbane games on Sat nights at 9.30 i think.

They used to show Knights games on NBN late at night.

They should still do that forregional teams like the Knights, Cowboys and Raiders. It's pathetic they do it anymore.

Brisbane people are the only ones who get a Saturday night replay when the Broncos play.

I agree. Why can't replays of league games be shown in these slots so people with no pay tv can at least see them?

If it's good for the AFL, it should be good for us.

They're not permitted to. PBL own Nine Brisbane. PBL own 50% of Fox Sports, so Fox Sports agree to on-sell to Nine Brisbane, but won't sell to any of the regional channels, that are not owned by PBL.
