PALS AGAIN: Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald and North Queensland's Denis Keefe, who traded insults last week over the June 30 issue, kissed and made up at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night. We hear Fitzgerald stuck out his hand and said: "Thanks for playing the game." And after all, they have a lot in common - neither's parents could spell Dennis.

'EARS TO BRIAN: Sin Bin has seen it all now. Parramatta coach Brian Smith actually brought prop Corey Pearson to a post-match media conference on Saturday night to highlight something heard on Sports Ears. If you'll remember, the little green devices played a key role in Smith's falling out with Brisbane captain Gorden Tallis a few years ago.

Anyone know what it was?

I vaguely remember something about Buettner(?) being heard through sports ears admitting something to a ref about our game plan? Possibly about that it was Parra's tactic to constantly verbal Gordie to get him riled up and make mistakes/lose his temper in a game against the Broncos?

Yeah in the Brisbane game they were playing on Goride and Bill Harrigan's poor relationship at the time...Caylo was in Bills ear telling him not to take stuff from Gordie.

I remember Pearson being told to go away cos he's not the captain during the game.

I think they were referring to the claim that the referee told Hindmarsh that if he had of stayed down after the high tackle from O'Donnell? that he would have received a penalty for it. Pearson was standing right next to them and passed on what was said. The ref's boss was supposed to look into the game tapes.

Boss dives into row over penalty claim
By Steve Mascord

NRL referees coach Robert Finch will investigate claims that referee Sean Hampstead told Parramatta second-rower Nathan Hindmarsh he should have stayed on the ground to attract a penalty after a high tackle on Saturday night.

Eels hooker John Morris made the allegation in an interview with WIN Television that was aired yesterday after the 28-6 loss to North Queensland at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

After the match, which featured several high shots, Eels coach Brian Smith and prop Corey Pearson hit out at the growing practice of taking a dive.

Finch said he would be "very concerned" if Hampstead made the comment. "But until I check the match audio I can't really make a comment," he said. "I agree [with Smith and Pearson].

"We are doing all we can to prevent it happening but, at the end of the day, our referees aren't doctors. It's not for them to say if someone is genuinely hurt or not."

Cowboys interchange forward Matthew Scott came off on a medicab late in the victory, which kept the home side in finals contention.

"He has some knee damage but at this stage it looks like it's minor, not season-ending," coach Graham Murray said.

Eels interchange forward Justin Tsoulos aggravated a shoulder injury.

I think Hurri was after the info on the older issue with Gordie...

I think Strider summed up exactly the game I was thinking of!

What gets me is if Hampstead said that, I cant understand why you need to stay down for a penalty? O'Donnell got him high, even warren Smith said as much (but gary Freeman was carrying on like a tosser), so a penalty should have been awarded. It shouldn't matter if he got back up or not!

The reason is that if the player stays down....play is obviously stopped, providing the video ref with the chance to have a look at the tackle and tell the ref there should be a penalty.

Simon Woolford and the raiders did it very, very well in the game at parramatta.

Micky Vella also got pinged this way against Manly at Parra, hit someone early, ball went lose, guy stayed down, ref had called the scrum then on video ref advice blew a penalty.

another example of Brian Smith and hence Parra being the laughing stock of the NRL

why? because they stood up for the right thing? Staying down to milk a penalty is a blight against the game, and so Smith stands up for what's best for game and all of a sudden he is the laughing stock because of it?

You have a very warped sense of reality.

Players are abusing the system and should lose it. If the on field ref and touchies miss it, no penalty, but warn the player who commited the offence.

Nope, actually I was asking about the new issue

I knew about the Tallis/Buettner thing

Sorry Hurri, sorry Colonel. My mind-reading powers hit a snag!

Re players staying dwon for penalties - if the league doesn't come up with some way to cancel that effect out, it'll only be a few years before it's as bad as international soccer with players taking dives!

the worst sight form the soccer world cup in 2002 was to see Rivaldo drop to the ground clutching his face after the ball had hit his knee while he was waiting to take a corner, followed by the opposition player being sent off.

while i love soccer this made me cringe and shake my head. how can it ever be taken seriously when things like that happen?

league has always been seen as a game where you give as good as you get. when you get hit you try to get up quickly to show the opposition that it didn't rattle you ( even if you miss the next few plays trying to overcome it). that is what league is about! exerting physical and mental authority over the opposition.

while i acknowledge some players are already doing it, it will be a sad day for the game when players continually "fake" injuries to get a penalty.

Times have changed - coaches know penalties (repeat sets of 6 tackles) win games and coach their teams to cheat.

I know Morley is a hard bugger - pushes it to the limit with his tackling - but one thing I admire about him is that he'll take as good as he gives - if he gets whacked in th head, he'll get back up and get on with things.
