Fui Fui Moi Moi faces the sack

By Ray Chesterton | January 20, 2009 12:00am

PARRAMATTA cult figure Fui Fui Moi Moi is facing the sack after returning to Sydney 10 days late from a holiday in Tonga.

The Eels have launched an investigation into why the front-rower - a hero to the club's blue and gold army of supporters - has been stuck in the South Pacific while his teammates are busy with pre-season training.

It is believed Moi Moi told club officials that storms and floods in the island nation prevented him from catching a flight home for days on end. But he faces drastic punishment if it is revealed he could have got home sooner.

Former Test lock and newly installed football club board member Ray Price told The Daily Telegraph the situation was being viewed extremely seriously. "We'll look at what Fui Fui and his management say caused the delay," Price said yesterday.

"There will be harsh punishment if there has been any misleading of the football club.

"No player can lie to his coach and the club. But we will wait until we have all the facts."

Moi Moi's situation wasn't discussed at last night's uneventful first meeting of the new Parramatta Football Club board, but the giant prop is expected to show for an Eels training session today.

It is likely he and his manager, Roy Spagnola, will then be asked to explain the circumstances of his delay in returning to Australia.

If Parramatta are convinced his late arrival was avoidable, Moi Moi will face a stiff penalty. Axing from the club is one option that would be considered. Last night, Spagnola said it had not been possible for Moi Moi to leave Tonga any earlier.

He said that although media coverage had focused on storms paralysing Fiji, other South Pacific areas had also been affected.

"Fui Fui was on a small island, not on the mainland," Spagnola said.

"He's been waiting since last Wednesday to get a flight back.

"He should have been back on (January 8) so he's about nine or 10 days late. But he will be at training (today)."

Spagnola said he had spoken to Moi Moi on the telephone and instructed him to contact Eels coach Daniel Anderson to alert him to his predicament.

"I don't think the coach was happy about it but he basically said, 'Get back as soon as you can'," Spagnola said.

He said Moi Moi had been granted an extended break from training because of his heavy schedule in the final months of last year, which included World Cup commitments with the Tongan side.

"He asked for an extension to his usual break because of some family things he wanted to look after," Spagnola said.

took your time, Ray

Fui Fui left the Warriors when Anderson was coaching here ... I wonder what their history is like?

Fui has always had that cavalier attitude...he pushes it as far as he can.

DA does not put up with anything like that.

if he's found to have mislead the club, I'll back any punishment that comes to him.

Can I just ask how/why Ray Price is making comments on this issue ? Correct me if I'm wrong, but he is now a board member of the FC who administers Ball, Matthews & Wenty - right ? So WTF is he making comments like:

yeah i first thought the same thing gronk ... but then, the new board want the NRL back under the FC, so, while Ray probably has no control over what might happen to fui, if their belief is they should be controlling then NRL then they should have an opinion on it

He's entitled to an opinion Strides, but he's talking as if he has some sort of authority here. Like he has the ability to adjudicate. Where as in reality, he's not in the mix.

I'm concerned that he's talking out of place here.

unfortunately, until the LC elections are done we might have this "demarcation" situation .... and if 3P don't win the LC board, might even go on after that??? .... hopefully all will pan out nicely

By the way Air NZ website is showing that flights out of Nuku'alofa are booked out until Saturday. To make the journey it looks like you need to go via Auckland.

good question, one of the reasons would be that Chesterton doesn't and hasn't spoken to Fitzy in years and him talking to Price is just snidey way of getting back at him ;-)
