Congratulations to Gateshead Thunder who were promoted to NL1 on Sunday.

If anyone can't remember, Gateshead were an expansion team in Super League in 1999 but they were 'merged' with and effectively taken over by Hull FC after only 1 season. The club reformed but since then they have finished bottom of NL2 and therefore been the worst team in the country for 4 out of the last 6 seasons and gone bust 3 times. Last year they finished 2nd bottom. In 2008, the team are currently top of the league and have already gained automatic promotion with just one win from the last 3 matches guaranteeing them the championship. Next year they are relocating to a much better stadium will play against teams like Widnes, Halifax and Leigh in NL1.

It's great that after so many years of struggling and being the worst team in the country, Gateshead are finally on the way back.

It is pleasing to see a club that has been built up by the fans doing well on the pitch and hopefully they'll be able to gain a few more fans as well, after all they are all sport mad up in the North East.
