Getting out Cheap

Ever been absolutely crushed but gotten out cheap because of an idiot not knowing how to play their cards?

I had someone CALL me with QUADS after I rivered an Ace high Flush and had raised to 4000 after they had bet out 1000.

Why would anyone, ever, anywhere call with Quads?????

They had flopped a boat, checked it down to the river (trying to suck me in maybe????). They had Quad 2's and there were 9's out there but seriously, calling??????????

Assuming the board here is 2,9,9,2,X....

You didn't get out of it as cheaply as you should've. Why did you raise the river? The board has paired twice and all you're only really hoping to get a call from a better two pair or an AK type hand that missed the board (but if that was the case the hand would've played out differently). If you put them on one of those hands by all means call the river bet but you shouldn't raise because they are only going to call with a better hand.

btw there is only one reason not to reraise on the river and that's if, for some bizarre reason he had reason to believe you were holding pocket 9's. Just sayin'.

Yes, that's a check-fold board. If you have a good read on them and believe they would throw out a river bet with just an Ace then you could check-call, but raising is pointless for the reasons stated above.

I did see a guy yesterday tank for 60 seconds on the river before eventually flat calling ... with a straight flush. He said he didn't realise, which makes me wonder what he was doing while he was tanking.

You do see some strange things at the poker table.

Board was 2,9c,Qc,9,2c

I was able to check to river then raised after she put out a pot size bet on river. (I had Ace 10 clubs)

Was the nut Flush raise that bad when playing against people who will play AQ down to the end???

The reason there is no point raising is because they can't call you unless they have you beat. If you can't expect them to call you with a worse hand, why raise?

All of this aside from the fact that it's a double-paired board.

You also have to take into account pre-flop action. If they had A-Q they surely would have raised but are more likely to limp in with any hand that includes a 9 or a 2. I don't know who was in position here but you need to take all of these things into account.

The pot-sized river bet also suggests that they don't seem too concerned by the board and likely have a good piece of it.

Even if they are betting with nothing, there is no point raising because they can't call you.

Thanks for the input.

Got a deepstack tourney tomorrow (all be it a FreeRoll) at the local club, top 10 win a ticket to the NQ Pro-Am being held next year.

Farkin free poker can drive you nuts sometimes.

Maybe he was multitabling more than he should've been...

He actually mentioned later on that he was stoned - obviously pot doesn't lead to optimal poker ...

Oh I've made that mistake. Mind you, I've had the odd session where my fearless drunkenness has reaped some very fast dividends - but more often than not I just destroy my bankroll.
