Gilbert Modrau Sets New A Grade Record!

Last Sunday in Newtown's hard fought 48-22 loss against second place Coogee Dolphins saw a new record for Fijian A International, Gilbert Modrau.

Carrying 14 goals into the game Modrau was looking to clench the record on Sunday and it was he who scored the first try after some brilliant backline play and pressure on the Coogee line. Converting from 20m to the right it was evident he'd brought the kicking boots with him.

The second try came about through some great pressure on a kick chase which forced an error from the Coogee number one. Coach Pierre Tonouse scooped up a loose ball and crossed under the black dot. Routine work for Modrau as he posted the extras.

Coogee broke away and at 30-12 the game was getting out of reach for the Jets, but a contested high ball between the Coogee winger and LeagueUnlimited's very own BrendotheJet saw Newtown come up with the ball and a try to our five-eighth just before half time.

The resulting kick gave Gilbert an A grade record and NEwtown a fighting chance.

After the drinks break Newtown came out firing and dominated well into the second half. It was only the bounce of the ball that stopped Newtown from scoring on a number of occasions as they gave themselves every chance to win.

Unfortunately two quick tries to Coogee against the run of play sealed our fate. Newtown scored late in the corner and the conversion(not by Modrau) was wide.

The performance was a brave one as Newtown called on their coach and trainer for players after being reduced to 14 men only ten minutes in.

Unfortunately with the season drawing to a close this loss ends Newtowns shot at the title.

Rest assured though the remaining players will continue to give their all until seasons end. It has been a long road for everyone and those who are still around have shown they have the heart and pride required to fill a Royal Blue jersey.

We will be out to play party spoiler over the next few weeks and make sure everyone walks away from the season saying "Newtown will be the one to watch next year"

Stay tuned for further A Grade news and make sure to get down to one of the last few games!

Regards,

BTJ
