THIS WAS POSTED ON THE PI SITE YESTERDAY ABOUT PRESTON

PRESTON LOOKING GOOD FOR WCC
Jan 29 - Preston Campbell believes he will be fit enough to play in the World Club Challenge and is looking forward to the trip next week.

The Panthers five-eighth has been suffering from a groin strain but had tests yesterday which showed it was healing well. "If I make it through training this week it'll be okay," Preston said today.

"I'm really looking forward to the match.

"We've been training very hard because we know it isn't going to be easy. The competition in England is getting stronger and Bradford is a good side. So we have been all taking it very seriously. We aren't going over there for a party."

Asked how he thought the boys would go if neither he nor Ryan Girdler were available, Preston replied: "With or without us the boys would go fine. They would step up."

And he wasn't about to make any excuses about the weather conditions in England at this time of year. "We'll have to take what we get and won't complain."

Later, coach John Lang said that while both Ryan and Preston had both seen in some doubt, Preston was looking more likely to play.

"I must say Ryan is more in doubt," John said. "He will see a doctor again later today so we should have more news tomorrow. At this stage we will leave the decision until Monday."

He agreed with Preston that the loss of one or both players would not phase the rest of the team - "they'll take it in their stride."

John said that one reason for leaving for England so early - next Wednesday - was to give the boys more chance to acclimatise. "The Roosters did that last year and came back with the goods. Other Australian teams have left it later and haven't done so well, so we think getting over there early is the thing to do."

Asked about his decision to hold back his top players from the World Sevens, John said: "It's a bit of a balancing act, really. We copped a bit of flak from the (Sevens) organisers and I suppose that's fair. But we wanted to make every post a winner and didn't want to get any injuries. That's why we are not playing any lead-up games (to the WCC match)."

THIS WAS POSTED ON PI ABOUT GIRDS TODAY

GIRDLER OUT OF WCC SQUAD
Jan 29 - Ryan Girdler is out of the Penrith Panthers squad which travels to England next week for the World Club Challenge match against the Bradford Bulls in Huddersfield.

He has been suffering from pleurisy and has not been able to train for over a week.

"He saw a doctor again this afternoon and he's just not well enough," coach John Lang said.

Ryan's place in the 18 man squad will be taken by Brett Howland, but John has not yet decided on the final make-up of the team.

The Panthers leave Sydney on Wednesday to give themselves time to acclimatise for the match which is on the night of Friday, February 13 - that's Saturday morning, February 14th, Sydney time.

Good news about Preston but not so good with Ryan. It's a shame for Ryan, i know we can field a team and win without Ryan but it's the knowledge that he will be missing out on a lifetime chance that's sad. :(

the weather over there isn't good for Ryans health. It could cause more problems. I would rather he rest up and be ready for round one, Healthy :D

Girds still isnt fit enough to play in the trial this weekend..i hope he doesnt "suddenly" find fitness the day before round one and get slotted straight back into the first grade team without any type of match conditioning..the same thing happened in round one of 2001 against the eels (i think) with both he and gowie and we ended up getting flogged as both players were targetted!
Methinks this could be Girds last year as a Panther :?

Yeah i wouldn't be suprised at all, 31 turning 32, he has accomplished many things and is injury prone so it wouldn't be a suprise.

With girds and Lang retiring, it spares a bit of money on the salary cap to buy a good prop and winger.

We are only speculating that Girds will retire though, nothing has been said officially. We are only going on his history of injuries and his current state of health. I will only believe it once it is made official, until then the number 3 jersey belongs to Girds. :D

...Or to pay the increase brought about by having representative players
...or to cover the pokie tax :(
We may not see any signings for a couple of seasons while the clubs go through some "belt tightening"

I reckon RG will have one of his best seasons yet, over injuries ect...

He will kick ass this year?

Your thoughts?

He has only just started training again after his recovery from pleurisy so is behind the 8 ball in regards to being right for round 1 :?
Not sure how he will go after finally getting a G.F win (i guess that will be the $64 question this year, how does Penrith bounce back after an "unexpected" premiership)
If anyone in the side tries to take it easy and bludge i hope Langy doesnt hesitate to use reserve grade... 8)

But the question is....Does Girds still own a boat? ;-)

Mos of your posts so far predator it seems you are not convinced yourself? I thought Penrith convinced all of it's fans that they were going to be No.1. They certainly had me convinced and nothing has changed my mind. I reckon you were more sure of the Panthers being a solid top 8 last year than what you are of them achieving the same or similar high result this year. Sure it's gonna be tough but I wouldn't have though you to write them off before kickoff. :?

I have this sneaking suspicion that this could be Girdler's last year. He is off contract, and the poor bugger seems to be suffering the after effects of that sternum injury from last year.

He'll have a big one this year, and show that he is still one of the boom centres in the game.

No i havent written them off and as far as the top eight is concerned i have them in the top 4 8)
Maybe i havent been clear enough in my posts, what im trying to say is that everyone will be gunning for them and will know what type of game we play and that it will be a bit harder this year...thats all!!
I still have bad memories of '92 and how the team disintergrated (albeit unforseen circumstances)after the high of the Grand Final win and wouldnt want to see it happen to my team again..I want to see a Penrith dynasty!!
Theres a chance for Penrith to finally have some golden years and i dont want to see it go to waste!! ;-)

Everyone knows that the Panthers (even without my sweetie Satts), is more than
capable of getting back to back trophys.

But for that to happen, everything has to go right like it did last year.

Touch wood for this year, but look at the massive amount of injuries that we faced
for about 5 or 6 years in a row, right up to last year.

With that many injuries, no team could go all the way. But the first year that we got
by with only a couple of medium term injuries, and what happened? We went all the way.

If we can keep those injuries down, and the boys can keep the same level of
enthusiasm going again all year...........then ANYTHING is possible.

And I'm sure that the boys would LOVE to send Lang (and possibly Girds) out with
a massive bang and two in a row, and I'm sure they would llike to get back to back
when the Roosters couldn't, so they certainly won't be lacking in motivation that's for sure.
