Giteau back to 10?

According to Larkham, Giteau is a shoe in for the first game of the tour at 10.

Article taken from http://www.rugbyheaven.smh.com.au/news/international/larkham-gives-giteau-the-nod/2005/10/25/1130239521111.htmlhttp://forums.leagueunlimited.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=92
Injured five-eighth Stephen Larkham believes Matt Giteau will be handed the No.10 jersey ahead of Mat Rogers for the opening international of the Wallabies' European tour, against France in Marseille on November 5.

Larkham, who will miss the tour because of a shoulder reconstruction, is expecting Giteau to regain the pivotal spot even though Rogers excelled at No.10 in Australia's previous Test against the All Blacks in Auckland.

"I think the France Test is the most important and hardest game of the tour, and I'm sure [coach] Eddie [Jones] will put his best side on the paddock," Larkham said yesterday. "You'd probably go with Gits … just because of his experience."

But this does not mean Larkham has a low opinion of Rogers' ability as a five-eighth. To the contrary, he was impressed with how well Rogers transferred from fullback to midfield.

"He had a very strong kicking game, and for the conditions that night it was very good. I would have liked to see him running the ball a bit more, and I'm sure he would liked to have done that as well," Larkham said.

However, Larkham argues that by the end of the Super 12 Giteau was showing he was a gifted playmaker. "You could see Matt improving week to week … it's now a matter of him getting used to making those primary calls."

yeh i say why not, since giteau is kinda fragile and probably not a great idea to play at no. 12. turinui should be there instead, he's a vice-captain after all.

Probably a even better Larkham at that. May be thats why Larkham wants Giteau there. ;-) I would like to see Giteau given a go though, he still hasn't had enough time to prove himself. I hope next season for the Brumbies, Larkham shifts to fullback and Giteau takes the 10 so that he can get a full season at 10.

Even in this comment Larkham is taking a subtle shot at Rogers, not running enough. Could Aussies1st be right that Larkham is worried about Rogers taking his spot? Or is he showing a bit of union snobbery, preferring the union-trained Giteau over the league convert Rogers. Or am I way off the mark?

I can't imagine Rogers would be too pleased reading Larkham's comments. And how will Eddie Jones react to a player predicting or perhaps trying to influence his selections?

I know I will probably get flamed for this but IMO Giteua isn't a true 5/8, sure he has played good against chumps like Italy, Samoa and England but when he comes up against the big boys like the Boks or AB's he struggles both with the defensive workload and the amount of pressure these teams put under him. But at inside centre he is given a ticket to roam around and create oppurtunities, he is no different from a Jean De Villiers/Gavin Henson.

I still think he is a good fly half but is a great inside centre.

I agree, he was groomed as George Gregans replacement for ACT and the Wallabies.

but what about giteau's defensive work since he'll have to help out with the defensive traffic run at no. 10? maybe he and rogers should alternate positons in defence and attack.

Problem is he won't get much chances to run as most teams will mark him. At least at 12 he can create space.

But he will be able to control the play alot more @ No 9.

If he wants to control play he should do it from 10. 10 is the play maker role, 9 is more distribute role.

Oh right, I still feel 12 is his best position. Hes too talented to go to halfback.

yeh well giteau deserves a chance first-up, because to be fair they meant to use rogers as a stop-gap thing. since giteau is so injury prone they are trying to make rogers as versatile as possible.
