As a kid (when it was our anthem) I used to wonder why we wanted to send her to Victoria? maybe it was because she "longed to rain over us" and it always seemed to rain in Melbourne!

Anyone know whats the deal with "Land of Hope and Glory"

in the england a v australia match they referred as the national anthem. But thought that is God Sav ethe Queen.

It's England's national anthem. God Save the Queen is the British national anthem.

VBFG, I have read that GSTQ is not officially the UK national anthem because it has never been passed in an Act of Parliament nor a Royal Decree. Is that true?

Ahhhhhhhhh..........the Sex Pistols version! I belive this was released around the Queen's silver jubilee in 1977, and subsequently banned in Britain for a bit.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.......THE FASCIST REGIME!
THEY MADE YOU A MORON......POTENTIAL H-BOMB!

But God Save the Queen, despite the sentiments it expresses, is a good tune. So is Land Of Hope And Glory and of course, Advance Australia Fair. But I tell which two ones are shocking that I've heard recently? 'Flower Of Scotland" and the Welsh anthem. Insipid, I say, terribly insipid!

So I would like to know when the Brits sing God save our queen... whether they hope they save OUR queen at the same time?

Not that I want the Pom Queens or Kings or anything... just think it is strange that they call her their Queen when she is our Queen too... not that I want their Queen but the majority said they did want the same Queen if that makes any sense.

Aren't test matches supposed to be nation vs. nation?
Is it fair that Great Britain can select its team from 4 different countries?..maybe Australia should team up with New Zealand - then it would at least 2 against 4.

4 against 1 and they have not in 30 years, maybe if they start to dominate us.

from what i understand the terms 'nation' and 'country' are different

GB is made up of the nation-states of england, wales, and scotland

whilst ireland is now independent

so really it is the country GB plus Ireland (hence the name GB & I)

however i believe it is important to include ireland for historical purposes

as well as rthe fact brian carney is an awesom e player

woohoo

NPK made a good point. Are the 'historical purposes' that the British had conquered and oppressed the Irish? Hmm, not the best grounds really. To give the Lions dispensation for that would be to employ a double standard.

That said, the GB&I team does serve the purposes of the game for the moment. Lewis has promised that ireland will eventually become independent of the Lions setup when RL further develops there. Also, Carney really did help the team.
