Going nowhere: outcast Mortimer ready to see out rest of Eels deal

DANIEL MORTIMER has officially notified Parramatta he will see out the rest of his contract with the Eels.
Mortimer, who has been playing for Eels feeder club Wentworthville in the NSW Cup, was on July 22 given permission by Parramatta management to search for other playing opportunities.
He did not ask for an actual release and remains contracted to the Eels until the end of 2013 on a deal understood to be worth $220,000 annually.

But the 22-year-old's manager, Steve Gillis, said yesterday that because it was late in the season and NRL clubs had already done the majority of their player recruiting for next year, there were no opportunities available.
''Daniel will be staying at Parramatta,'' Gillis said. ''We have done the rounds, but because of salary cap pressures there is nothing available. I'm sure there are other clubs who would be happy to have him if they had room, but room isn't available at this stage. As far as playing in England goes, Daniel isn't interested in considering that move. I have officially notified the club on Daniel's behalf that he will be staying.''
Eels chief executive Paul Osborne told the Herald at the time Mortimer was granted permission to look around, that ''If Morts comes back with an opportunity, we wouldn't stand in his way, but if he ends up staying then that's OK as well''.
Asked yesterday for his reaction to this latest development, Osborne said: ''I've got a meeting with Daniel's manager on Friday.''
The apparent delay in Parramatta signing representative centre Willie Tonga, who was recently granted a release from the final year of his contract with North Queensland, is believed to be due to the club's need to make room for him under the salary cap. Tonga would be expected to command a contract worth at least $350,000 annually.
It is understood that if Mortimer were to stay, it wouldn't stop Parramatta signing Tonga, but the contract may have to be ''back-ended'', meaning whatever Tonga's deal averaged out at over three years, he would receive less in the first year and more in the remaining years. Back-ending contracts is generally not a situation clubs prefer.
There has been talk the Eels may try to offload another player to help make room for Tonga, but there are no signs of anyone leaving.

Damn... hope there's no snags with the Tonga signing. We need a class centre more than a very expensive reserve grader to remain on our books for 2012 and 2013.

I guess that means we have to keep Morts as the back-up half/hooker, and so won't/can't re-sign Maguire for that role?

He'd be lucky to get 6 figures from any other club. I can't begrude him from making the most of the eels mistake.

ossie should get a commitment that mortimer shops himself again before the start of next season
or else what? - mortimer and his manager don't have to do anything, he has a signed contract .... if morts wants to look around and parra are happy for him to then good, but no one is in any position to give anyone any ultimatums

if i recall correctly, end of 2009 he signed a 2 yr extension with an option yr in his favour, hence the end of 2013 i guess

exactly!

I tell ya what, if I had $220k a year coming in for the next 2 seasons I would not be going anywhere - I'd play for Wenty, or Wenty reserves, or whatever.

And if I was managing someone on $220k per season, I wouldn't be looking for a release for them unless they were getting the same cash elsewhere!

Morts can do as he pleases and is entitled to, but Does anyone else out there believe that parra are publically playing mind games with the tonga signing, I know I made the comment in the star wars thread that tonga is gone to the sharks but after what I heard on Monday he will not only be at parra but is being used as a diversion to some other things potentially going on.

My take on the Morts thing is that they have interest but not at $220k, so they are putting pressure on us to pay some of the deal for the next few years. We of course are saying no - you can play reggies for two years for all we care.

Personally Morts should do what Finchy did and get out whilst he can. After another 2 years in reggies, he'll struggle to get a 2nd tier offer.

And the reality is gronk, his manager is right most clubs have spent up to their cap, in hindsight we probably should of given him the green light to look around much earlier.

Onya Stags. Now f**king spill beans ! :fist:

No point really, because the sopie drama that is our club tends to change from day to day but in saying that I still believe there's plenty of moving and shaking to happen by the time pre season training comes around in November!
