Gold Coast World Rugby League 7's

Sorry I know this has been a recent topic, but all this rubbish talk about AFL has made me mad.

Ok, this idea has been around for a while. At the end of the day, League needs to do more on an international basis. It is our big differentiator from that crap VFL. The 4 nations is going to be great, the next World Cup will be great, the missing piece is a 7's tournament.

I think the key is to be a on an international basis, not clubs plus selected countries. This a) makes it more interesting b) solves the problem in the clubs kicking up a stink about it being a drain on the players and c) increase the brand of international RL.

The venue should be the Gold Coast, this could be Leagues version of the HK Sevens, party town, summer time, people travelling from around Australia and the world to attend. Can also fill the gapping hole left by the Indy folding (sorry don't think Supercars can fill the hole).

Countries should include:

Australia, NZ, England, PNG, Fiji, Samoa, Wales, PNG, France, Japan, Russia, America etc. Need to have the fun countries involved, if anyone remembers 'The Duke' playing for the Tomahawks.

Also should have other events around the weekend like legends beach footy matches which can be broadcast on tv later (like the beach cricket concept).

Live coverage on Fox, international rights can be sold.

So when is it going to happen??

I agree that it's a great idea. The World Sevens has so much potential. It could sell out any stadium. ANZ stadium got 60,000+ over 2 days to watch reserve grade 2nd string teams play the last time it was on and when it was in its prime it sold out the SFS. I like the old format with the NRL clubs included though. I would love to see Marshall, Inglis, Bowen etc in Sevens. With 16 clubs involved and international teams, each club would only need to attract 4000 of their fans and it would sell out ANZ.

But the clubs don't want to take the injury risk of sevens football. So instead they go and play 80 minute trial games in the sticks infront of a crowd of 10 people.

I reckon 9's is more entertaining tbh. But yeah, something like that would be excellent.

Yeah I don't think so. No one would care. Players wouldn't be interested at all and it would be an amateur competiton same as rugby 7's. Nice idea in theory and could work well at a basic level, but you're dreaming if you think it would be a sellout.

Seriously re-doing the world sevens at the Gold Coast is such a great idea.

They would need to force NRL teams to name at least 5 players with minimum 10 game first grade experience. Some kind of stipulation like that.

Bring back Morocco, Russia, PNG etc.

On the Gold Coast it'll sell out!
