Golden point is bad football

The more i see of it the more i dont like it

Its an ugly field goal shootout with nearly a wonky shot going off each set.

The ref never blows a penalty, players lie all over the place and dont retreat ten.

maybe they should just make it 5 each way with no golden point. for clubs games it should be punted altogether though.

Thoughts??

have a penalty shoot out start at 30m then 40m then 50m
only reason i say this is for the covell factor i doubt we would lose too many golden points ;)

yeah, I gotta agree. Playing extra time seems like its purely for the satisfaction of the fans. Why isn't it alright to simply have a draw? If at the end of 80 minutes it's a draw then surely that means the match should be a draw.

In any case, I think the extra time system we have is pretty shit. Why have a golden point rule? In soccer, scoring a goal is the point of the game and giving extra time to kick a goal doesn't change the nature of the game. With league, having a golden point changes the game completely (as you point out). So, if we are to have extra time I think it should be in the form of a ten minute period where the person with most points at the end is the winner, not simply first to score wins. That makes tryscoring important and would keep the match from simply being a drop kick contest. SOO last night should not have been won by a fluke that happened 3 or 4 minutes after the final siren sounded, it just doesn't sit right with me.

i disagree the last few years weve had the draw, the team that won the series the year before ended up winning the current series, which at the time was always the cane toads. i say there has to be a clear result for soo and finals games the comp itself is another story.

Golden point is purely a fan thing, i think once a player experiences a golden point loss he'll always agree its a bad thing. Though i guarantee you if it had been NSW who were beaten they would be the ones complaining.

I would like to see ten minutes each way, before the golden point.Every golden point game I have seen is just a field goal shotout, thats garbage.I wanna see another 20 minutes of fatigued giants giving it their all.If it isnt sorted by then,go for the golden point.

Just my opinion of course.........

I'm of the belief it should be Golden Try. Bugger the field goal, it becomes a shoot out between the two opposing sides, and to me that's not what Rugby League is about. Endurance and going the distance is part and parcel of our Great game. It would still be a great concept and even more rewarding for the players.

A Golden Try would be a good concept if you changed the rules around where you can not go for field goal or penalty goals ( EG - If you got a penalty 10 out right in front you have to go for the try )

However I think two extra time periods of 5 or 10 minutes would be better and the highest winner at the end wins.

Yeah Penalty goal could go alright too, or even better, if the attacking team is penalised, elimiante the option on a penalty goal and just go all out for the try. None of this changing ends crap after 5 or 10 mins (well maybe in Premiership football but for Finals and Representative matches), just constant football until the first try is scored to win the game for whatever side. Now that would be entertaining Rugby League. Sure it would be draining on the players, but that's what the game is all about. Last man, or team in this scenario standing so to speak...

totally agree - why can't there be a draw? Especially in the normal rounds ... maybe extra time (but NOT golden point, some of the other options are better imho) for finals and SOO.

IMO - have 2 five minute halves, with a golden try rule. Field goals and penalty goals can be kicked but play continues until time runs out. If still tied after the 2 halves, unlimited time with golden point (but only in SO and finals, not regular season, that will be a draw)

of all the different codes of football,i find the college football extra time the best.

a team will start 30m out from the oppositon goal until they run out of downs or score.so i9f they were to score only a field goal, then the other team gets the ball on the 30 and if they score a touchdown they win,if they fail to score a field goal they lose and if they also score a field goal they repeat the process until you get a winner.

it is fair for both teams, the standard of football is more exciting and better to watch.
the nfl last year was looking to move away from golden point and hopefully go for the college system.

i would love them to try a similar thing over here.i'm not a fan of golden point as it is now.

i think it's the worst part of the current game .with 2 more origins to go what damage can be done to the games best footballers by playing extended game
time against quality.

can some tell me what was wrong with a hard won draw 8)

Golden point is good.

Draws aren't necessary in league. Such a stale feeling coming back from a draw. I'd rather lose in extra time to be honest. Plus if the teams really can't be separated after an extra 10 then it truly is a draw.

Plus exciting too. I remember esp the Super League 3rd SOO when Goldthorpe kicked a field goal in the 107th minute or sthg like that.

There's nothing wrong with a draw, except in the third game in SOO.

so what if they draw first game and nsw wins game 2 and qld wins game 3??? wouldbt that defeat the purpose of having it in game 3???

The best suggestion I've heard is playing extra time but the winning margin having to be 2+. This way it would not necessarliy be a one dimensional game as it is now, purly working for field position & landing a field goal.

Teams could still opt to do this, but they would need to do it twice, running the risk of taking a one point lead then giving the opposition the ball & a chance to score a match winning try or penalty goal.

I don't think Golden Try could work because players would committ every professional foul in the book knowing that a penalty goal would not win a game. With the two point margin suggestion it could be suicide to give away a penalty within kicking range.

A lot of you are coming up with very complicated scenarios for extra time. Goldentry could prove difficult to gain a result from, while setting up a scenario where each team gets it on the 30metre line until one scores seems too artificial. A draw is most definately an unsatisfying result for fans but it doesn't mean it isn't fair. Draws should not be eliminated simply because fans are a little unhappy with such a result. If a match is a draw then both sides deserve only one point, I have never seen the point in changing that.
