AUSTRALIAN pop star Gotye has won two prized Grammy awards at the US music industry ceremony in Los Angeles. The Victorian singer, real name Wally De Backer, won best pop duo performance for his song Somebody That I Used To Know with singer Kimbra, while he picked up a second award for best alternative album for Making Mirrors.
“I recorded it mostly in a barn on my dad's block of land southeast of Melbourne, Australia, so I have to thank Dad and my Mum for setting up a lot of weird equipment in a barn near their house,” the 32-year-old told the awards audience.
Gotye was also in contention for the prestigious record of the year title, again for his global hit with Kimbra.
“I obviously have one major person to thank and that is Gotye, Wally De Backer, for having me be part of this incredible song and this incredible journey,” Kimbra said.
“I don't really feel worthy of being up here,” a surprised Gotye said on stage during the pre-televised section of the Grammys.
The other nominees in the best pop duo category were Florence + the Machine (Shake it Out), fun. (We Are Young), LMFAO (Sexy and I Know It) and Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa (Payphone).
Somebody That I Used Know has topped the No.1 singles chart in 18 countries, selling more than 12 million copies worldwide since its Australian release in July 2011.
The hit was also the most downloaded song on iTunes of 2012 and the most streamed song according to Spotify.
For record of the year, Gotye was up against fun, The Black Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift and Frank Ocean.
The Grammy for song of the year went to pop rockers fun. for their transcendent anthem, We Are Young, featuring Janelle Monae.
“I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote the chorus to this song,” lead singer Nate Ruess joked. “This is in HD, everyone can see our faces, and we are not very young.”
Fun. may have picked up a major win, but it was The Black Keys and Skrillex who had the early lead thanks to strong runs in the pre-telecast awards show.
The Black Keys singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach took the early lead during the pre-telecast show, picking up three trophies and assisting with a fourth. Auerbach won producer of the year alone and best rock bong for Lonely Boy and rock album for El Camino with his bandmate Patrick Carney, joining electronic dance music innovator Skrillex atop the early leaderboard. He was also producer for another winner, Dr. John.
A slew of artists sat one back going into the main awards show at the Staples Center, including fellow top nominees Kanye West and Jay-Z, Australia's Gotye, former best new artist winner Esperanza Spalding, jazz man Chick Corea and Christian singer-songwriter Matt Redman.
West and Jay-Z won best rap song and best rap performance for the song gentlemen in Paris from their Watch the Throne collaboration and lost a third for short form video for No Church in The Wild, which featured Ocean. Ocean was up for five awards later in the evening.
Other early winners included Rihanna, Beyonce, Mumford & Sons and Taylor Swift.
Adele won the first award of the night on the main telecast, taking home best pop solo performance for Set Fire to the Rain (Live), in one of the night's least-surprising moments - though the singer was somewhat taken aback.
“I just wanted to be part of the night, because I loved it last year, obviously,” she said of winning a record-tying six awards in 2012.
Skrillex won best dance recording for Bangarang, featuring Sirah, best dance/electronica album for Bangarang and best remixed recording a year after winning those same awards in his first appearance at the Grammys.
