Plans afoot for 30-hectare sports complex in Sydney's north-west
By Stephen Rielly
March 25, 2004

The AFL and Cricket Australia have been linked to a huge infrastructure development planned for Sydney's north-west that would include a purpose-built ground for the two sports.

The project is understood to involve state and local governments who are planning for population growth in the Baulkham Hills/Kellyville region.

Neither the AFL nor CA would comment on the project but it is believed that a 30-hectare parcel of land is being considered for purchase on which a full-sized Australian football/cricket oval would be established and facilities built to create a dual regional development centre that could double as a venue for AFL pre-season matches and limited-overs state cricket.

It is understood that the acquisition of the site will be made with state and local government funds in exchange for certain committ-ments from the AFL and CA.

The Baulkham Hills/Kellyville region is seen as appealing not only because of the land it has available to build a tailored venue but ideal also for junior development given that large numbers of families and children are moving into the area because of its affordable new housing.

It is understood that the venture was discussed at length by CA at its last board meeting, although CA chief executive James Sutherland declined to elaborate.

His AFL counterpart, Andrew Demetriou, was similarly coy.

"I will neither confirm nor deny what you are putting to me," was all Demetriou would say.

Let's just hope 30 years down the track they don't decide to bulldoze it, sell the land and build a stadium in the city ....

lol :) Yes I am still bitter and twisted about Waverley Park ;-)

Waverley Park was good in the sense that the AFL owned the stadium and didn't have to be dictated to by the MCC, however it wasn't the best location weather wise and them wooden seats use to really hurt your back - not to mention the outdated orange and black TV scoreboard :(

They could quite easilly have refitted the ground for a hell of alot less than they paid for the television studio in the city.

The big benefit of Waverley Park was it was the local ground for where alot of the development will come in the next 50 years ... As more and more people move to the Penninsula they will have further and further to travel to get to the G or Colonial.

Refurbishmet would have been good to keep a large stadium in AFL hands and as you say cater to new developments in the area, however in the end I think Channel 7 had a lot to do with Docklands being established.

Of course they did ... But that's no excuse for what is essentially a stupid development. They always could have spent similar money refurbishing the ground and finishing the place and putting the second level on to get the capacity up to 150k.

Rather than the 52k capacity television studio in the city.

Have a look at that photo ... Always was the best surface of any stadium in the comp.

Must be all that rain out in the East ;-)
