NSW have now persuaded David Mead to chuck in 5 years of playing for PNG and declare for Australia - so he can play in a City-Country park fixture. Jesus would indeed have wept!!

This whole sham is about State of Origin games and match fees and nothing else!

He'll be back with PNG at the next World Cup. Bloody joke.

What with City-Country, The Kangaroos, QU20s v NSW U20s etc. the ARL need to find around 90 players this weekend.

No wonder PNG, Tonga, Fiji and Samoa are getting done over.

Who cares about City-Country? Why the hell do you have to declare for Australia to play for a damn Sydney team? All the City and Country Origin teams mean is that you played your first football in NSW. Has absolutely nothing to do with where you are from.

What an absolute farce. We are a joke of a sport!

And that's about the 1000th thread you've said that in.

If you don't declare for Australia, then you aren't eligible for NSW, so there's no point in playing in what is effectively a trial match for NSW.

It's Mead's choice if he wants to take a stab at an Origin jersey. If he didn't declare for Australia though, then they can't pick him for NSW so playing him in City vs Country is a waste of time when they could play somebody who is actually eligible.

I'm afraid to say its Australian Rugby League who are holding back International Rugby League. SOO is not the be all and end all for Rugby League, but it is in the NRLs eyes.

Everybody knows that. We are saying the rules are ridiculous.

Didn't Mead want to play for QLD a few years ago?

Why are they ridiculous? if he wants to play for PNG, he can go ahead and do so, and in the process he is no longer eligible to play what is a contest for Australian players.

It's his choice to make. It's not an all star game.

He didn't care who he was elegible for, he just wants to play rep footy which is understandable if the opportunity is there.

As recently as last Saturday week, Mead told The Courier-Mail he was unsure of his eligibility, but was leaning towards the Maroons.

“I’m not sure what the rules say so we’ll see how we go,” Mead said.

“I think I’m eligible for NSW but growing up I always went for Queensland when I lived in Papua New Guinea, so I would like to choose Queensland.

He wouldn't be a walk up start for NSW, kinda pointless gesture if his highlight between now and the next RLWC is City-Country.

Let's be honest, David Mead's a reasonable player but I would be extremely surprised if he is ever in the selection talks for the NSW side.

What really disappoints me is how the ARL is so adamant in hurting the game Internationally. All we are doing is making a larger divide between us and the rest of the world which helps who? If there is no opposition how will the Kanagroos side attract sponsors, crowds etc which bring in revenue? It's the old cutting the nose off despite the face!!

Imagine how the international game would be these days if Petero played for Fiji his whole life.

And would've of played 20 games less than he did while playing for Australia.

Pacific teams need tournaments each year first then we can talk about eligibility after.

Petero is an Australian though as well. We can't just say how good would it be if every islander who has ever played for Australia played for another country. Yes, give them a choice, but lets respect the decisions they make (and hope they don't change it).
