23. REVEREND HARRY POWELL (Robert Mitchum) in THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (United Artists, 1955)
A magnificent film about to what extreme a man will go in order to steal from two young and innocent children something their father had left for them in trust. The evil character of Harry Powell, a charlatan preacher taking advantage of poor and unsophisticated country folk, is one of the best creations in the novel. Harry Powell doesn't care what he must do to get his hands in the money. He marries the children's mother, a widow who was hoping for some happiness in her life, only as part of his overall scheme of things.
Robert Mitchum is the evil Harry Powell. It's without a doubt, one of Mr. Mitchum's best screen work. As guided by the director, the actor gives a performance that still surprises whoever watches the film for the first time.
24. RICO (ENRICO CAESAR BANDELLO) (Edward G. Robinson) in LITTLE CAESAR (MGM, 1930)
Rico Bandello, a petty crook nicknamed LITTLE CAESAR, plots his rise to become crime boss of the Big City.
Edward G. Robinson made a tremendous impact in this star-making saga of a thoroughly detestable little man who bandies his way through society's underbelly for a short time until fate brings him his just reward. The evil spawn of a deplorable age, Rico cares for neither booze nor dames, only pure raw power. Even loyalty & friendship are weaknesses to be deplored since no one can be ultimately trusted. Robinson, with his frightening eyes and large ugly mouth, makes this human scum fascinating to watch - a cheap little monster in expensive suits, a moral nonentity with a big gun.
ALEX FORREST (Glenn Close) in FATAL ATTRACTION (Paramount, 1987)
Glenn Close will forever be identified as the unhinged colleague of married with child Michael Douglas who have a brief fling that Douglas lives to regret.
25. THE ALIEN (Bolaji Badejo) in ALIEN (20th Century Fox, 1979)
Now as you know, aliens are naturally rotten bastards. The impressively vast amount of organization, knowledge and skill it takes to travel across the universe is astounding. It's a tough feat.
With such levels of tech and knowledge, one would think such advanced alien civilizations would be nice and civilized. They are not. On the top of every alien's agenda is one thing: think of ways to ass-rape people who live on "Earth" and scare them with laser canons. It never fails.
Going with all the body snatching, blood-sucking (Killer Clowns from Outer Space!) and city smashing, it takes a special being to be the most asshole alien of all time. So here's to you, damn Alien from the movie Alien. Go ahead and drink our last beer, you asshole.
Quite possibly, the most frightening-looking creature in motion picture history. Which, to me, gives it the edge over Predator.
TRAVIS BICKLE (Robert DeNiro) in TAXI DRIVER (Columbia, 1976)
To me, he is more of an anti-hero than a pure villain. But, I included him at he did make the Top 50 villains list.
Robert DeNiro's performance in Taxi Driver as Travis Bickle is one of the best I have ever seen. DeNiro does every pause, smirk, and stare in exactly the right time. He transformed a despicable and psychotic character into a lonely and desperate man, who the audience can relate and understand. His scenes talking to himself in the mirror is entertaining, at the same time, terrifying.
The film is about the brutal power of the disaffected mind.
