GRUDGE MATCH: Saints v Souths

Well according to the Telegraph it's a done deal.
The Dragons and the Rabbitohs will be playing in the opening round of 2002.
"If you needed a bit of feeling in a game, this would add the right flavour' - George Piggins
"If he (Piggins) wants it, we'd be only too pleased" - Peter Doust
"It would be wrong not to give this match strong consideration" - David Moffett

The tip is that the match will be played at the SCG and I reckon it's going to be a real rip snorter. I think we're talking about 50,000+ .
Should it be played at Stadium Australia? How many people could this match draw?

28,000's the record for a walk up crow for the Charity Shield and 80,000 for a Grand Final featuring the two sides. Probably somewhere in between.

And the Wests Tigers have issued a Challenge to Souths to meet in a pre-season game for substantial "winner take all" prize money already, they have a sponsor who are preparedto put up the purse.

It's gotta be at the S.C.G. As far as this match is concerned, tradition is everything.

Cheers.

Souths-Saints has been a grudge match since the late 1920's. It is a great way to start off Souths return and a new season.

The SCG might not be available because of the cricket.

Welcome to the forum, SaintDoc. Good to see another Dragons supporter here.

I agree with you. That opening round you suggested would draw some huge crowds.
Although the jury is still out on the Central Coast etc.
... still, we have this year to get through, yet :)

Not a bad draw. Parramatta playing twice might cause some concern, although I suppose the chance at four premiership points would be an incentive for the club ot give it a go (the first team to lead the premiership outright after one round!).

Thanks for the welcome Willow
But no thanks at all to Bigbopper for pointing out my "oversight"!
I thought I'd finished before the Parra-Penrith game, and when I counted I came up with only 14! So I racked my brain, came up with Penrith and then decided a local derby would be a nice crowd pleaser! So what if the Eels have already played? They have enough depth to cover 2 teams! lol
But I really have been a bad boy, how could I have possibly forgot everybodies favourite team, the NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS!
In the revised draw, Penrith can play the Dogs at the double header, and the Warriors can take on the defending premiers Parramatta in Auckland!
