Hages warns Hayne

PARRAMATTA Eels coach Michael Hagan will tell young star Jarryd Hayne not to whinge to the media after his "I don't want to be on the wing" comments.

"If he needed to talk to me about that, I'm happy to talk to him, like anyone else," Hagan told the Advertiser.
"In the end he's a State of Origin winger. I didn't see him complaining to Craig Bellamy about being picked on the wing for NSW."
Parramatta will be hoping to continue their good record at ANZ Stadium when they play the resurgent South Sydney on Saturday.
The Eels had a poor performance at Parramatta Stadium last Sunday when they lost 22-16 to the Penrith Panthers.

In the only team change this week, Chad Robinson returns in place of Joe Galuvao, who made a rare appearance when Robinson was a late scratching with a back complaint.
Hagan conceded there were a few below-par individual performances against the Panthers.
"We're entitled to expect more from a number of players based on how they played," Hagan said.
"We've played poorly in a game at home, which is disappointing, but we still were a chance of competing in the game.

"I thought the players at least competed to the end. The score could have probably blown out the other way if they didn't dig their heels in.
"But we can't afford to be starting as poorly as we have been. In the last two weeks we've had to come from 10 points down."
* EELS football general manager Greg Mitchell will leave the club at the end of the season to head up the Western Sydney Rugby League Academy.
Despite a recent announcement that it would be based at Blacktown, Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald revealed Penrith's CUA Stadium would host the academy.

Mitchell's role was created when Parramatta Leagues Club also ran soccer and rugby union teams early this decade. While soccer (Parramatta Power) is long gone and the club will cut its ties with rugby's Two Blues at the end of this year, Fitzgerald confirmed the position would be retained.

In other words, start putting in that position before you get considered elsewhere. I like it.

What?

It reads as if Hagan is a moron.
'uhhhh - he played wing for the SoO team... uhhhh'

Newsflash Michael: So did Tahu - yet you still picked him in the centres.
Mateo, Hayne and Inu are our 3 best attacking weapons. Just because Hayne hasn't been the best centre in the world this year (in his first season in the position) is no reason not to pick him there. He's been strong - got outplayed by Hodges, but has generally looked dangerous in the spot.

The only thing that he got right was to say 'we might expect more from a couple of players' - but then again, if a team comes out flat as a tack to start the game, whose fault is that?
If you payed me to coach the squad and they came out flat and ordinary, I think I might shoulder some of the blame for preparing them poorly.

I think the media distorted Hayne's comments - to an extent.

I also think there was an element of sulking in his comments, and they can't have been good fort eam morale in any way.

I also think some of our young blokes are very naive when it comes to the media. Jarrod and Feleti in interviews I have seen have been very easily led by interviewers.

The media knows there is a lot of public interest in Parra; in the alleged feud between Feleti and BS; in the background of the Kings Cross incident; in the alcohol issues; and in selction issues involving Parra.

Not real hard to make a controversial story by putting a few leading questions to inexperienced, simple young blokes, especially when you throw in a few misleading headlines and take quotes out of context.

Reddy has done more in attack this year than Hayne.

Hagan is 100% correct. If Hayne has an issue with where he is selected then talk to the coach rather than the media. Seems Jarryd likes to see his name in the paper from this angle.

You think Jarryd rang up the paper? It was a pretty small piece tbh. Not worth blowing up IMO, better dealt with behind closed doors.

But of course, Hayne is now a forum punching bag.

I'm more concerned that we have a coach who has said previously he wished we had a bye because he had no idea, or who talks up a top 4 charge despite the fact we'd been playing liked busteds and couldnt string 2 in a row together.

For a while now he has seemingly been the "unofficial spokesperson" for everything that happens at Parramatta. Not sure but I am starting to get the opinion that the kid likes attention. Do I think he rang them? No, but he doesn't need to bring selection policies into the media - maybe turn his phone off for a while and start thinking about playing fullstop rather than what position he is in.

And as for forum punching bag - no different to Burt, Wagon, Lowrie or Reddy copping it. But that is ok because they just take up salary cap space and offer nothing. Can't berate an Origin player rumoured to be the highest paid player in the club for not putting in can we?

As I stated in my first post - it is good to see that Hagan has some backbone. More of it needed though but its a start.

Perhaps the kid needs a word in his ear from our media manager about how to best answer questions if he is cold called from the club.

Nobody is saying that Colonel. Just seems like Hayne is the flavour of the month now. I think this whole story is such a beat up, its not funny. A couple of small paragraphs in the tele results in a back page advertiser response?

Better dealt with behind closed doors.

What a beat up....everything that I can imagine being discussed between the journalist and Hayne was nothing that none of us didn't already know.....INCLUDING Hagan.

Maybe next week's story will be "Hayne tells Hagan not to whinge to the paper about him whinging to the paper".

Seems like there are 17 players who are the flavour of the month. Only one of them talking about where he is playing in the media. Maybe a beat up but it goes back to the fact if there was nothing said in bthe first place then there isn't a story. Maybe some time with the media officer would be good, maybe some time with Rip Taylor might be better - a few of his mates could do with the same time.

Better dealt with behind closed doors.

Where it should have been in the first place. But everyone has carried on that Hagan doesn't show any backbone and the moment he displays half an ounce he should do it behind closed doors?

I'd rather the whole club stop talking to the media other than when they have to after games and such. Too much talk over all but sometimes maybe a bit of direct talk may work.

I'd rather the back bone be shown with tough decisions at the selction table instead of responding to non stories.

and that seems to be the Parramatta way when things arent going well. Even under Brian Smith.

I think we need our best players near the ball more. It's not rocket science. Hayne is 100% correct.

News Flash Olddy!!!..who runs the team??

whether you love him, hate him or want him removed from his position, the player should be airing his grievence at the coach not the media..

your contradicting yourself saying Hayne is correctand should play centre. But Hayne is in fact saying now he should be played at fullback. This is after he stated he wanted to play centre. Hayne should pull his head in. No wonder the team doesn't seem to be playing for each other. How would Burt be feeling?

here here. People seem to be missing the point of this entire argument. At no stage are we saying that Hayne may play best at fullback but he has gone about it totally wrong. He is playing in a team sport and ffs he is not the coach (selector). Hayne is entitled to his opinion but keep it to himself.

Burt is very popular amonst the players and I'm sure they will not like to be reading this sh*t in the media. Does not spell good imo (possible infighting etc).

It's true Stagger, Hagan does :)() - which is why he should be setting the example?

Have you read Haynes' comments?

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,23982213-5001023,00.html

Notably:
"I don't want to be on the wing," Hayne told AAP after confessing to feeling almost helpless as the Eels dropped outside the top eight nine rounds shy of the playoffs.
"I couldn't do anything out there. I will have to have a talk to 'Hages' and see what he can come up with to get me off the wing.
"I just have to see what happens and whatever best suits the team and whatever 'Hages' wants to do every week."

Seems that Hayne said the right thing to the paper that CALLED HIM UP - he said he'd talk to Hagan and do 'whatever best suits the team'.

Hagan comes across as a moronic hypocrite by speaking out about the issue. He should have said 'no comment' when asked about Haynes' words - but instead he says 'he should come talk to me' (which is what Hayne said he might do).

Can you see the hypocrisy?
Hagan says: "Don't go to the papers to complain, talk to the other person" in a complaint to the papers....

Shouldn't Hagan have talked directly to Hayne about it (particularly if he runs the team??) instead of whinging to the papers? (the very thing he was upset about??)

Again, Hayne didn't really whinge to the paper, just answered a question or two and said whatever is best for the team.

Where's the problem? Doesn't really seem to be with Hayne (based on his interview and Hagans)
