i'm getting really demoralised with the eels. wondering if you guys agree with me in terms of who should be dropped/given a chance next week:

1 – Wade McKINNON: he ran the ball back hard, but has poor support play and general positioning. because we have no one else he should keep his spot. in.
2 - Matt PETERSEN: i'd rather play with 12 men then have him on the wing. poor defence, does nothing. loved the pass 10m from our line on the first tackle knocked on by burt. out. void his contract plz.
3 - Junior LANGI: too quiet, give someone else a go. out.
4 – Luke BURT: very poor, not first grade material. definitely not a centre, more a winger than anything. out.
5 – Eric GROTHE: thank the heavens he is in the team. in.
6 – Daniel WAGON: regardless of what people think he's one of the best players in our team right now. strong defence. in.
7 – Adam DYKES: he was in form at the start, struggling a bit now, but without him we would be poo poo. our smartest player. in.
8 – Adam PEEK: ordinary. we need aaron cannings badly.
9 – John MORRIS: our best hooker, only person including dykes who runs out of dummy half with a bit of intelligence. in.
10 – Craig STAPLETON: ordinary bench player from st george is now our best prop. that says something about our heart and talent. in.
11 – Nathan HINDMARSH: best player on our team by a long margin. in, please clone him except the hair.
12 – Nathan CAYLESS: has adapted very well to second row, but i think we do miss his impact as a prop. apart for some dumb penalties and errors one of our best players. in.
13 – Dean WIDDERS: willing to take on the line rather than run sideways, defence is a lot better nowadays. in.

15 – Chris ARMIT: a lot of promise.
16 – Shane MUSPRATT: why not leave thorman in with morris and dykes rather than use this guy. he's meant to be more versatile as another forward but he did nothing at all last night. out.
17 – Justin TSOULOS: him and fui fui (once he heals) should be our interchange forwards. in.
18 – Chris THORMAN: runs pretty funny. i dont understand why he was played at hooker, but his crisp passing did impress me. I think he needs a chance at 5/8 as first or second receiver. defence was better than i thought it would be from a small bloke. in.

with that in mind, this is the team i propose for next week;
1. mckinnon
2. burt: only because he has exp as winger, and i have faith in that position he can turn his form around.
3. wagon: he doesn't pass anyway as a 5/8, and seems to stay on the right side in d, he'll strengthen that side up.
4. widders: i believe he can be an 80 min player, he is willing to take the line on, and his defence has improved. imagine him offloading to grothe.
5. grothe
6. thorman: i like his confident style of play. i think in 2-3 weeks he can be as effective as dykes, morris.
7. dykes
8. cayless: move him back to front row plz, we need someone who can break the advantage line. (if he is suspended, vella, if vella is not fit, peek last resort)
9. morris
10. stapleton: eventually i'd want cannings here
11. hindmarsh
12. muckert: give him a go !
13. hopkins: so much heart.

interchange:
14. armit
15. tsoulos (eventually fui fui will take one of these spots when fit)
16. vella (if not fit, peek)
17. graham: give the kid a run to see what he has now, also useful in case widders gets tired or one of our backline gets injured.

I like your side but I would have Witt in and Thorman on the bench. I love your centre pairing. Its the best we have got.

I like the centre pairing as well. Widders & Wagon are probably not so quick but they are good defenders and have very fast wingers on their outside in Grothe & Burt. The only difference is i'd have Wagon inside Gorthe ont he left & Widders indside Burt on the right side. Widders step is more dangerous when he's on the right side of the field. There is no way you could drop McKinnon on his last 2 weeks performances so I agree with him retaining the fullback spot. He's been great, very enthusiastic and determined. Burt needs to be in the side somewhere so i'd put him in ahead of Petersen who looks to me to be in a real form slump.

Cayless will be gone for a long time, partly due to suspension but more likely due to a serious arm injury that is yet to be confirmed. Atleast Vella will be back and Moi Moi also. Armit is also in doubt with a supected broken arm.

I'd like to see (but never will because Smith has his own ideas):

(assuming Cayless & Armit are unavailable)

1. McKinnon
2. Burt
3. Widders
4. Wagon
5. Grothe
6. Witt
7. Dykes
8. Stapleton
9. Morris
10. Vella
11. Hindmarsh
12. Muckert / Hopkins
13. Hopkins / Muspratt

14. Thorman
15. Peek
16. Tsoulos
17. Moi Moi / Pearson

yes fridge, burt is a winger. he performs well in that position. and tends to be crap/average at fullback and centre

whilst everyone is sick of smithy using players out of position, due to our current problems in the centres i'd love to see witt or thorman get a run there (with the other one at 5/8th replacing the ever-awful daniel wagon, who with out forward injuries should move back in the pack)

fridge, re: your #17

not to scare everyone, ash graham was on crutches after the game. we asked him what happened, and he laughed and shook his head, but never actually said what was wrong. #-o

There was no enthusiasm. There was more heart in the pies on sale in the canteen than on the field and the discipline was lacking severly. Our Premier League squad isn't going great guns but I have to say I'd rather see some of the enthusiasm of youth then the crap we had to put up with on Saturday night.

1. McKinnon - deadset he went forward more often than the front rowers in the first half. His second half wasn't as good but he still played well.

2. Burt - He isn't a centre, five eight, fullback or whatever position he was lining up in on the weekend. His kicking has not been good and he needs to pick his game up with decent and consistent displays by Mowbray and Gruszka in first division.

3. Ben Smith - He is a centre - he plays right centre, his defence is better than what has been offered and he isn't frightened to have a go. Its worked in the past with young players been given a chance to shine so why not.

4. Wagon - He has to be in the side for his defence.

5. Grothe - Does some great things but needs to hold the ball when he is tackled sometimes. Doesn't need to off load everytime.

6. Morris - If defence is an issue at least Morris offers attack in his resume as well as great centrefield defence.

7. Dykes - He has been our most attacking player all year.

8. Stapleton - He needs to play with the same fire that he showed against the Eagles. He has played well but needs to lead the way if we are short Cayless and Armit.

9. Muspratt - He defends strngly and has a good passing game. He offers a different ption in attack.

10. Tsoulos - He is getting better and deserves a shot with Cayless, Vella and Armit injured. Has to pick and choose when he offloads but he goes forward.

11. Hindmarsh - Move over Mr Price........

12. Muckert - He is a defender and we are lacking a centrefield defender to back up Wagon and take pressure of Hindmarsh defensive workload.

13. Hopkins - Provides, heart and enthusiasm and another option in attack.

Reserves:

Mateo - Has to be given a chance. We lack enthusiasm and he plays with plenty. He much like Hopkins love their footy and it shows.

Kaufusi/Curtis - We are going to be short on grunt and they have plenty.

Vella - If fit I wouldn't rush him straight back in to start but we kack forward leadership and he has to stand up.

Widders - would like to see him in the centres but think he offers more off the bench against tiring opposition.

Thorman/Pai - given a chance again I think neither would disappoint however I think that Thorman needs longer in first division. We would have enough ball players in the team however if Mateo is held back then one of these two deserves a shot.

Colonel whilst i'd prefer to see either Witt or Thorman in the 6 I wouldn't argue with that side at all. Certainly a better balanced side than the rubbish Smithy has been dishing up lately.

One thing is for sure, Wagon needs to be out of the 6 and into the centres where we need him more.

McKinnon - Did the job at fullback, nothing exceptional in attack but he seems safe in a way that Peterson isn't. Committed too
Peterson - Too many erros, bad under the high ball, this guy had potential last year but far from a first grade regular
Langi - Too quiet? Blame that five eighth Wagon. Langi offers promise
Burt - Burt is a great player at best, he's not a centre though, should be at fullback or on the wing.
Grothe - Best back this season by a long way
Wagon - Defensive? Yes. Creative? No, and that's what we need as 5'8th. Even he admits his form has been down, far from the best in the side
Dykes - Too much pressure on him with only one playmaker, been back to his best though this yr.
Peek - Don't mind this fella, tries hard and always seems to have a big workload
Morris - offers us some spark, good kicking game too
Stapleton - Going great guns, seems committed and has been making some great runs this yr
Hindmarsh - No need to say how good this guy is
Cayless - Has been our best forward after Hindy, played some terrific games this yr.
Widders - better coming off the bench

1. McKinnon - Deserves his spot
2. Burt - Best on the wing
3. Wagon - Would instantly fix up outside defence
4. Pai - Why not? Try him then lets turn it over to the youngsters
5. Grothe - Just don't let him pass
6. Thorman - Passing game looked outstanding
7. Dykes - Keep him around the ruck
13. Hopkins - Has heart which we're dearly missing
12. Muckert - Would seem the ideal replacement for Cayless
11. Hindmarsh - God
10. Tsoulos - Got heavily involved so I'd like to see him start
9. Morris - Solid
8. Vella - With Moi Moi as my impact prop, Vella starts and make him captain because he's a 10,000% better player when he leads

14. Mateo - Future star deserves his go
15. Widders - Good impact player out wide
16. Moi Moi - Awesome impact prop
17. Stapleton - Keeps momentum rolling - I would like him to finish the game as he doesn't make mistakes and is a great defender which is needded when its tight

We need to find a centre combination. Before we give a shot to the young guys I'd like to see Pai get a shot there.

Wagon has done nothing wrong, he isnt a creative player, he is a defender. It isnt his fault that Smith has him in 5/8!

but he is passed his best, instead of him we should have let another player have the opportunity to play first grade, but i would'nt mind having him in the centres to improve the defence out there

From what i have been watching on tv the past month or so team moral has been very low (i'm thinking big probs within the club)started just after killer left the club (maybe there was more to his leaving???). Whatever the problems are get them sorted out quickly.

As for Morris starting off the bench last week i didn't see anything wrong with that, Thorman played extremely well while he was on the field, only thing is i would have played him at halfback or 5/8 with dykes and got wags out of it.

Widders is not the best option at centre. I like the Colonel's idea of Ben Smith. Wagon on the same side as Peterson. Thorman is a good defender but if you want more defence early start Morris at 5/8 and muspratt at hooker then cycle Thorman on at 5/8 and Muspratt off so he can come on into the back row.
