Harrigan's slegde to Riddell

At Kogarah last Sunday, some folks in front of us were wearing the ref's ears thingy while the opposing front rows were having trouble packing down.

They said they heard ref Bill Harrigan say to hooker Mark Riddell, "...if you lost some weight, you'd get in."

'The Fat' (ironically) tonight on the ABC repeated the audio. It's been well documented that Riddell has been working hard to get his weight down.

Question is, are referees allowed to sledge players?

It was mentioned in the comentary. I think they got it wrong.

At the scrum Harrigan was warning Ridell that he hadn't been getting onside. Riddell said he was trying and Harrigan said that he should be able to do it now as he had lost some weight.

Which commentary was that Te Kaha?
The Fat program didn't have a very clear audio of the exact words but the people in front of us at the game were pretty adamant that it was joke at Riddell's expense.

It was off Sky, so I would imagine it was the Fox Sports feed. They only played it once and I missed the replay on prime.

I think Sky will replay it on Sky2 tonight so I will tape it and see if I can better understand what he was saying.

Thanks for that Te Kaha. It's also quite possible that it's a running joke between the two.

Ok, Having now listened to it a few times Harrigan was indeed telling Riddell to keep getting back the ten metres.

There are a couple of words of Harrigans muffled as well as Riddells reply (which he said while laughing) to which Harrigan replied " you're fit enough you've lost some weight".

There didn't seem to be much in it at all.

Yeah, I was talking to someone yesterday who reckons Harrigan and Riddell get on quite well together. Strange considering that Harrigan sent Riddell off last year. I guess it's a case of what happens on the field etc...

btw, thanks for having another listen. I'll be trying find time to do the same.

Glad that was cleared up...there seems to be abit of sledging going around these days. (eg johns & riddell) Having copped alot of it myself on the soccer field i really think badly of it and anyone who does it. It sure has put me off my game before and that kinda stuff tends to venture off the field too!
