Hawks tab Puerto Rican import
Wollongong Hawks
The Wollongong Hawks have announced the replacement import for released American James Peters with the the addition of 26-year-old Puerto Rican national team player Angelo Reyes.
The 203cm, 115kg power forward most recently attended the Milwaukee Bucks pre-season training camp where he impressed coaching staff but was unable to find a spot in the final roster. Earlier in 2007 he guided the Puerto Rican national team to a bronze medal in the FIBA American Championship finishing the tournament second in rebounding averaging 9.5rpg, out rebounding NBA superstars Dwight Howard and Amare Stoudamire.
Recently he won the Most Valuable Player award in the Puerto Rican Basketball League for the Carolina Giants averaging 19.7ppg and 11.9rpg, playing alongside Brisbane Bullets star Ebi Ere. Former Hawk Adam Ballinger also competed in the same league during the off-season.
“Reyes will be a great addition to our team, we will be looking for him to fill a void in areas that we are lacking,” said Head Coach Eric Cooks.
“He’s a potent rebounder, very competitive and will be another post target for us inside. He adds toughness to our interior defence with his physical style of play,” he added.
“He’ll fit really well with the team and with his strong work ethic and tenacity on the court I think the fans will really enjoy watching him play,” Cooks said.
Reyes is set to arrive in the country on Friday morning from Puerto Rico with a slight chance he’ll be given the OK to play this weekend.
“It’d be great for Reyes to play this weekend but if not he’ll have some time to get some training with the team under his belt ready for next week’s game against the South Dragons,” Cooks said.
