High Tackles Etc:

it seems that high tackles, spear tacles and other foul play is not going to be got out of the game despite the new judiciary so what is the best way to handle this problem? I think send-offs would go a long way to getting it out of the game, teammates would soon let the offenders know how pissed off they were having to defend for 70min with one or two men short its not working the way it is, players stay on and finish the game then have a weeks holiday. Gee is giving his old legs a nice 3 week break and probably still getting paid while he is laying by the pool.....your thoughts?

What gets me in the games at the moment, is the amount of players, and not just captains, mouthing off and arguin with the ref.
Maybe 10 minutes on the sidelines would put a stop to that.
As for the high shots, some look pretty ugly, and surely 10 minutes would sort out the crap. Especially for dirty bastards like Gee :)

Change the high tackle rule to make any contact above the shoulders illegal.

Police it really hard until the players learn to lower their 'target' area.

Or maybe bring back the five minute sin bin, give the ref's less reason to hesitate about penalising foul play.

Plenty of people will agree with you Hazy... including some very high profile players and ex-players.

But they tried to do that.

I agree, 10 minutes and a suspention would probably be just. But I do think that there's been some over-reaction to a few of these incidn\ent's lately. Take rtghe Matt Bowen "spear" tackle from last week. Now I agree that Bowen lifted the player above the horizontal and should cop a suspension for it as dangerous throw, but it was NOT a spear tackle, Bowenflipped the player right around and he landed on hisback.Laurie Daley was obviously showing his Rooster bias when he claimed that Bowen drove the player head first (which would have constituted a spear) because that just didn't happen; if anythingBowen held the player up a bit longer so he would flip right over and not land on his head when he realised that he had lifted him past the horizontal. Daley needs to look at the footage of the Kearney/Bai spear on McCracken to see what actually constitutes a spear tackle. As for Ricky Stuart claiming that the Roosters player was hurt by the tackle but showefd guts by playing on, grow up Ricky. They're bigboys and getting dumped on your back is just part of the game. Go play tiddlywinks if you can't handle it.

There's too many people being suspended.

I agree with Madas, just give them a stint in the bin and a penalty during the game. If you are careless in your tackle you will make the team pay.

A suspension should only be awarded when a deliberate high shot is put on a player - and that doesn't happen too often in the NRL.

Fans don't want to see out and out thuggery, but they don't want to see their players on the sideline either.

There's too many players suspended these days for stuff that doesn't seem deliberate.

The NRL have almost become a bunch of hanging judges closing examining everything for the slightest indescretion that they can pounce on, either with a fine or a suspension.

This does nothing to promote the game positively.

I agree with a penalty and 10 minutes in the bin but suspensions dont seem to be working. I'd like to see the best players playing every week... not sitting on the sidelines just because they lost their cool in the heat of the moment.

What about monetary fines?

I dont know if its ever been raised before but coaches can be fined for bringing the game into disrepute. So maybe the same could apply to players who go in with the odd coat hanger or spear tackle.

Maybe its too out there and would require too much of an overhaul of the judicial system. But imo, if a player is fined half his match fee, the message is more likely to get across.

I'm pretty sure all clubs add a clause to the contract allowing them to fine the player a percentage of his contract if he's suspended. Most are reluctant to enforce it - the last time I remember was when wests fined field and McGuinness - but maybe they should try to encourage the clubs to do so more often.

Brook, I'm suggesting that the NRL fine players part of their match fee. It happens in cricket.

The clubs are indeed reluctant to hit players in their hip pocket nerve so maybe the NRL should step in. Emphasis on the word 'maybe' because I havent thought it out yet.
