Five foes forge coalition set to ensure financial viability of clubs

IT'S the NRL's version of the supergroup: five Sydney clubs who have cast aside decades of animosity to join forces, pledging to work together rather than against each other.
South Sydney, Canterbury-Bankstown, Sydney Roosters, St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers have formed a coalition aimed at combining their ideas and resources to raise attendances and ensure they are more financially viable into the future.
It began as a meeting last Monday week involving the chief executives of four of the clubs at the renovated Belmore offices of the Bulldogs. It continued on Tuesday when marketing and sponsorship staff of all five clubs met at the Rabbitohs' Redfern headquarters.

While being opponents on the field, the five clubs see themselves as similar businesses with similar goals in a difficult financial climate. The Rabbitohs and the Bulldogs play out of ANZ Stadium while the Roosters and the Tigers - the latter to a lesser extent - play out of Allianz Stadium. The Dragons have one of the most marketable brands in the competition.
''This is something we should have done a lot earlier,'' Souths boss Shane Richardson said.
The five clubs aim to share ideas about attendances, membership, and have even raised the prospect of sharing sponsorships. The group discussed ways of attracting sponsors who will be willing to purchase jersey sponsorship or on-ground signage across all five clubs, rather than just one. ''It's five-times the exposure [for the sponsor],'' Richardson said.
''In this particular case, we wanted to be proactive. There's a whole gamut of things we can be talking about, structure of staff, different ways to improve attendances, the way we spend our money. It's about best practices.''
The idea of the Rabbitohs and the Roosters, bitter enemies since 1908, joining together is significant in itself. ''The reality is, there's always rivalry,'' Richardson said. ''While on the field, they're going to try to bash each other, as businesses, we're very similar. For the game's sake, it's a matter of trying to make sure we all survive. We're all rivals, but we want to make our businesses better. Rather than whingeing and whining about our problems, we're doing something positive about it.''
Richardson was cast as a villain last week after suggesting all nine Sydney clubs should play out of ANZ and Allianz stadiums, but the fact remains his comments prompted debate in the subject. While his extreme stadium policy might not be adopted, even a compromise would net the clubs extra money.
Richardson has stated that attendances, which have been down on last year's figures, was the most important issue in the code. The group discussed how tomorrow night's Carlton and Collingwood AFL match will be played in front of a massive crowd at the MCG, with a largely even split of supporters even though it will be Carlton's home contest. The sentiment from the group was that the days of not wanting opposition supporters to turn up in order to add to home-ground advantage was ''something from 20 years ago''.
''The game's at an exciting stage,'' Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce said. ''But commercially there are some challenges for all sports in Australia. We'll share some ideas and discuss what we can do as a collective group.''
Noyce said rather than excluding the other Sydney teams, any of the other clubs in the competition were welcome to use ideas from the brainstorm. He said the group had forwarded information from the meeting to ARLC officials. ''There's nothing stopping all 16 clubs looking at new ideas,'' he said.
Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg added: ''It's always good to have collaborative discussions surrounding common challenges … there are numerous opportunities off the field to continue to work together.''

It concerns me that they're all teams that could play out of ANZ if the agreement was reached.

I smell troubling times ahead if they consider themselves all 'similar businesses' instead of football clubs.

yeah Im with you drew sta I think these teams could all play out of ANZ but Im a realistic person and I think yes for our futures sake it may have to happen but also we may play out of three grounds.
Every one I speak to is tightening there belts with money, tough times ahead me thinks.
and even tougher for teams who go it alone.
suck it up sharkies.

Yeah and if we lose our home grounds and have to play at ANZ thats more advantage to The Broncos and Storm that enjoy one sided support at their venues (1 team 1 town)

Yea we could be part of a deal where:
We supply the junior players to the five clubs.
We play out of ANZ to make it cheaper for the other 4 clubs.
We give all our marketing secrets and hard eanrned programs to the other 4 clubs to make them more profitable.
We vote in favour of the other four clubs not to have to merge or relocate.

What a great idea!

Sounds great, but what's in it for them?

It will be great especially for the Illawarra folk , they'll get to travel an extra 30 minutes each way in the beautiful Syd da nee traffic . and when they finally get to the ground they can experience the bliss of paying $20 for the parking station on top of the extra time , petrol and carwear. Of course there's always the train when it's running .
The satisfaction of taking the kids and mrs on an extended rail trip through wonderful Redfern , a place that has to be experienced at night to really feel the local ambiance is a must . then you change trains and if your lucky and get a direct train well and good , however there is the chance you may change again at sunny Lidcombe or some other scenic Sydney location.
When you get to the ground make sure you have the visa handy because the local half cooked food starts at $5 an item , so lets say at a family of four you'll pay at least $60 bucks to stay half hungry during the game.

But what do we care if the family hates us and we're broke and hungry , we went to the footy , the corporates are happy , our lifelong friends and partners like $ouths and the ever loyal Wests Tigers are happy, News ltd are happy because like Dousty they have vision and can see what we morons can't.
Foxtel and channel nine are real happy because they'd rather you stay at home and watch it anyway . So long as the big end of town is happy who needs you...

so with your 5 powerd combined you become captain planet?

not at all suprising that clubs would align themselves with each other given the new IC.

means that there would be a 5 club voting block on things..if all clubs were "equally represented"

curious.

does not necissarily mean you would move to homebush though.

Nothing to do with HOmebush IMO.

There should be double header days involving the Sydney clubs for the Saturday twilight and 7.30 game.

That would be a huge money spinner for all the clubs.

Do it 4 times a year and its only 2 home games you give up. For Saints thats one at Gong and one at Kogarah.

Your spot on...i have no issues with this concept 4 times a year double-headers, make a carnival day of it. I love Kogarah, but i'm luckly to park a minimum 20mins away, facilities could still be improved.

Keep the home grounds to a out of town team and that would work.

Father, when I'm that f**ked up and useless, you can take advantage of your occasional position behind me to: top me.

If Flamethrower gets his way I'll only get four chances a year.

Still I'll take you from the grassy knoll with a magic bullet in a crossfire with Hugh , Muzby , Willow , Johnsy , GodZilla and Rexxy at point blank range someone should hit you lol ..Right after we finish the chips , dogs and pies . ...
P.S Be a good sport wear another teams jersey so we won't feel guilt.

What about all the money that has been poured into Win Stadium and Jubilee Oval. All for a few junior matches and soccer. The state government would be spitting chips, all that money and no votes.

I can't stand Homebush (and the SFS to a lesser degree). Being at the Charity Shield this year there was 20,000 fans and it felt weird.

It must also be remembered that the ANZAC game is a home game for us (and is taken out of the Kogarah home games). So we're already contributing to this theory. Six at Wollongong, five at Kogarah, one at the SFS. That's perfect for me.

I don't know about building permits, laws, architecture, council regulations, etc, but my theory is this. Add 3,000 seats every three years to Kogarah. By 2021 Kogarah will have a capacity of 31,000. Perfect.

Regarding Wollongong, Doust must not take games away from the Illawarra based fans. As someone mentioned above too, what has been the point of building the western grandstand there if they are going to take games away.

Also, part of supporting my 'club' (I don't support a 'business'), is just that, it's a 'club'. I enjoy having a meal and drink at the club before a game then walking across to Kogarah. And I enjoy going to Steelers Leagues Club after the game. I can't do this at the SFS or Homebush.

Personally, I don't like the idea of working with the other clubs. Its warfare and the further away they are from our organisation the better I feel :D

I will say one thing though, if we happen to move our home games to a bigger stadium, I pray to god it is the SFS and not Homebush. Unless we play a GF or semi final, I will not go near the Olympic stadium.
