In the SMH today is states that
"Amos Roberts, the NRL's leading tryscorer, is close to signing a deal with the Sydney Roosters worth a massive amount more than he is getting at Penrith"

What i want to know is...HOW THE F**K IS THAT POSSIBLE??

They just bought Firman (who was not cheep), and they've resigned Cross and a few other players...they have 6 Internationals...how can they afford Roberts who would easily command $300k??

Brian Smith---get off your butt and make Roberts an offer so the damn Goosters don't somehow manage to have all the best players in the comp!!! (At least they'll never get Hindy- i hope!)

Roberts would probably be on not much at Penrith now.

Roosters looking at paying him say.....$200,000 tops?

If they can afford to offer Lote 600K, they can afford this.

Whilst they are looking at signing players, they have a retiring Fittler and re-signed Ricketson to a lesser contract.

I think it personally makes a mockery of the cap system as its supposed to spread the talent. While to an extent it does, clubs like the Bronocos and the Roosters are able to drop players off the bottom of their list and replace them with high to middle level talent.

The sooner a draft system (that can't be challenged in court) is adopted by the NRL the better IMO.

The Roosters do have some cash freed up:
Freddy - retiring,
Ricketson - substantial pay cut
Hegarty - gone
Hodges - as good as gone

Roberts was apparently only on $50,000 at penrith....so anything $150K+ is several times more.

They are releasing a fair bit of their cap in Fitler, Hodges and Ricketson and also they don't have too many juniors to secure so they just poach from other clubs. However it does seem strange that a club with 6 Internationals can still sign from other clubs. They have already signed Firman, they are in the market for Monaghan, on the verge of signing Roberts and from what i heard they would have been very keen to talk to Priddis if he hadn't re-signed with Penrith.

Yeah, Fittler would be on around 400K, Ricketson's paycut would be say 150K, Hegarty wouldn't be cheap so lets say another 150K and the Roosters paid a bucketload for Hodges so that could be another 250K

all of the sudden the Roosters have nearly a million dollars to spend.

If Roberts goes there I don't know where Monaghan fits into their side. Hopefully it will strengthen our chances for him. Can't see em snaring both signatures.

I agree with you Eels Dude. Surely they cannot end up with both Monaghan and Roberts. Whilst its crazy to think that the Roosters could end up picking up a player of Roberts' calibre, at least that means that Monaghan is a better chance of coming to us. Whilst they are very different players, i'd be very happy for us to land either one.

Monaghan wants to go somewhere to enhance his rep selection plus they'll announce Tahu's signing soon to.

Ben Kennedy, Brent Kite and Tahu will be rarely sighted in rep games again.

Well, MAnly apparently have a lot of money to spare and Donald looks gone freeing up a little more so I'm not going to be surprised if they get both Tahu and J.Monaghan.

I'm hoping Parra get him but I'm not holding my breath

I don't know about Monaghan - I think he will move to Sydney.

IMO he has been calming the fans in Canberra by telling them he has been there for ever why would he move. If he was such a "Canberra boy" and he had $250k a year on the table already he would have signed. He's after the exposure and rep jumpers that aren't going to Canberra anymore.

Roberts signed with us for not very much at all, because he still had a year or so left on his contract with the Dragons, and the payout is supplementing his income at Penrith.

Girdler and Lang are both retiring at the end of the year, which would free up some money, but we have already re-signed Priddis, Ross, Waterhouse, Galea and Prichard this year, and all of them got their contracts upgraded, so that eats away a bit at the surplus.

It's down to Roberts and Whatuira. Whilst I would like to think we can retain both, I don't think that would be possible. Roberts, in my opinion, should be the bigger priority.

How can the Roosters afford to sign Roberts OR Monaghan? The mind boggles

They already have 12 representative players in their starting 17 for next year even without the likes of Fittler, Hodges & Cusack.

1. Minichello - Kangaroo International
2. Byrne
3. Hegarty - Kangaroo International
4. Cross - City Rep
5. Walker - QLD Origin Rep
6. Finch - City/NSW Origin Rep
7. Firman
8. Cayless - NZ International
9. Wing - Kangaroo International
10. Morley - GB International
11. Crocker - Kangaroo International
12. Fitzgibbon - Kangaroo International
13. Ricketson - Kangaroo International

14. Flannery - QLD Origin
15. Tupou
16. Catic
17. Webb

Fittler already took a MAJOR pay cut last year and they supposedly had to let Cusack go because he was a "salary cap victim".

Gee, the Panthers are playing the Rooster game now? The other day it was down to Pritchard and Roberts with Whatuira already gone.

Just my opinion, not that of the management (whoever it is  ).

Whatuira was given permission about a month to go to test the market. I don't think they would have allowed Roberts to do that - he's a valuable commodity.

Maybe we can retain both, who knows. But Whatuira is now a NZ rep, and Roberts has been one of the form players in the NRL this year.

Vaealiki is better then Whatuira. We do not need him. Freshy and Monaghan will do just nicely next year with Amos on one wing and Grothe on the other. What a backline!!!
