Hoping this will become a mainstay thread for budding graphic artists.

I myself would like to kick it off... I'd like to know how to get solid borders around things for that added effect. Half used to do it a lot I think... actually... example:

suitman.jpg

Suity's sig - the white around homer... how is it achieved? I've seen it done with club logos here and there too

Right click on the layer and go to blending options. Play around with the outer glow options for colour, spread etc. Looks like he's dropped a shadow as well.

Yeah defintley a blending option, unless he did it the hard way and drew a white oultline and feathered it.

i have a couple of questions about the image files

i recently got photoshop (downloaded it via limewire) and have started tinkering with some banners. I am however very new to drawing on the computer (i can draw with pencil and paper alot better) from what i have seen in the image properties of the banners in here (twizzle's, samwise's banners) they are JPEG images.

im not too sure but i think that photo shop images are not JPEG's.

in microsoft paint they are created as BITMAPS or something.

so here are my questions

What is a JPEG?
What is the difference between a JPEG, GIMP, GIF ect image?
Does the banner have to be a JPEG in order for it to be displayed?
will i lose picture quality by converting the file to JPEG?

any help would be much appreciated.
cheers

jpg's are basically compressed images. BMP's don't lose anywhere near as much quality when saved and therefore are larger filesizes.

Photoshop will alo\low you to save your artwork in a vast range of file formats, depending on how they are to be used.

When working on a file Id save it firstly as a .PSD, so you can keep your layers editable at a later time and for the image you want to be uploaded to the net, save them as with a .jpg .gif or .png, though Id reccomend .jpg (JPeg)

Dodger, all you have to do to get the white part around something -- and this is for those using photoshop -- is stroke the layer by about five pixels. Stroking is the function you're looking for, and you can make the outline any color you want.

Step by step guide: (In this case we're stroking the Titans logo)

stepbegin.gif

stepone.gif

steptwo.gif

stepthree.gif

And valla...

stepfour.gif

Very simple technique that adds a nice look to a lot of things...

Yep, and it's better to save things as jpegs because they are higher quality images.

Incase you haven't worked it out yet RCB...

When you have finished doing what you want to do and want to save a file as a jpeg.

Go to: (1) "Save As For Web."

After that (2) go to the "Settings" drop down menu and change the format to anyone you would like (photoshop allows you to save it as gifs, jpegs or pngs) and you've changed the output type.

Two step process that you can change each time you save something...:thumn
