How do transfer fees work?

For example half-man is one of the world's best strikers for Roma and I'm the man in charge with transfers at Inter, hybrid is in charge at Roma and puts a £25m transfer fee on half-man.

I agree and for £25m, I have half-man. This is a five year deal (to make it easy).

How much goes to the player and how much goes to Roma?

Once the clubs agree compensation then it is up to the prospective club to negotiate wages with the player. It is now the player can receive signing on fees etc. The player can also stop a transfer if he thinks the contract offered to him is not good enough or he just doesn't want to move.
