We did have 4 qld clubs but the broncos wanted a monopoly and destroyed it. Wanted the cowboys booted as well

You cant really blame them for that, thats good business to get rid of your competitor, you have to blame the people that caved in to them who should have been making decisions for the good of the game!

It worked for them at the expense of others. Premiership games in Brisbane each week is gold but it hasn’t happened because of this. Even though the Storm are an unofficial Queensland team they don’t play in Brisbane

Gould today:
Whatever money is invested in the game into the future has to be better managed than it was, the money has to be put aside for rainy days and the game needs to be able to support itself financially for a long period of time.
If that means a renegotiation of broadcast deals that is better for Channel 9, that is better for Foxtel, that is better for the consumer, then so be it. They’ll all take that opportunity to do it.

Again, Gould is singing the song of his masters.
And I guarantee, any deal that is better for Nein will be worse for the fans.

can you imagine if the nrl told tHe clubs they can’t have an increase on the grant, told the states they can’t have any increases, cut funding to grassroots and told the players they can’t increase the cap, just so the nrl can put away a few hundred million “just in case”! Gould is a dckhead.

Gus built an academy that is regarded as the best there is. He restarted the junior pathways, and has set up a system to get the cream of the western division juniors to be part of the Panthers. Penrith is now disappointed when they miss the finals, instead of rejoicing at the occasional finals appearance. He made some bad decisions and some good ones, but Panthers are a better club for his time there.
.

I will give you the notion that the centre of excellenxe was built while he was there and yes its one of the best. Whether it was his decision or not, I do not know although I am sure he take credit for it.

As far as leaving it in a better place, I can't agree at all. Penrith SG ball and HMatts were always bench marks of the competition, under Gould they have actually missed the 8 at times.
Under Gould there were bitter divisions amoung staff and players. Especially the religious boys not accepting the actions of the party ones. In terms of NRL results they have been nothing short of an abject failure given their roster and junior/fan base

Gould certainly has not left Penrith in a better state that when he got it, except maybe in video production

Left us in a far FAR better position. Before Gus Matt f**king Elliott was coach and Luke plod as f**k Walsh was the 7

Better people and the club (more than justan NRL team) isn't in a better position and the NRL team isn't performing any better.

I hardly think that's leaving the club in a better position

Yeah bomb and hope all year. Surpise surprise it fell apart in September

Sounds just like the Raiders during Elliot's tenure. Monaghan being a huge aerial threat was all that kept papering over the cracks. Recruitment was unfathomably bad.

For what Gould must cost and based on the panthers situation before his arrival anything short of a premiership is a failure

Than when? Pre 2011? Of course it is. They'd made the finals once in seven years when he landed in the place. It took another 3 years to make the finals, but we've been there four from six times since then, 4 from 5 at the time he left.

Not a dickhead. Just a paid mouthpiece singing his employer's song.

He absolutely left the panthers in a better position than he found us there is no doubt about it.

Edit: Id never want him in charge of the NRL though.

QLD clubs gave up the traditional suburban game in the 80's for fewer but larger clubs. 30 years later the game has never been bigger here. If only NSW could have seen past their nose in the 90's and we might have four or five super clubs in Sydney right now with a stranglehold on the local sporting market.

Its a real shame there wasn't an appetite and resources to go with a 20 team national comp in 1998. Some Sydney mergers, the national clubs, 4 Qland clubs. If we could have found a way to maintain that, the game would be in an amazing position now.
The premier competition in Australia should’ve been created in 1988, 14 team competition with four QLD Cup teams joining a 10 team NSW competition with Auckland, Melbourne, NQ and Perth added before 2000

It was still the NSWRL in '88. Even the Broncos were regarded as a NSW club.

It was the SL war that destroyed expansion in the first instance, with its explosion of player payments. This happened once again in the last decade, a time when Perth and Brisbane 2 could have re-entered the league. It would have to have been at the expense of Sydney teams though, as player salaries had again exploded, and the game didn't have the stomach to kick teams out.
