I am sick and tired of the referees running the game and dummy half running being a ridiculously easy way to make metres with the travesty that is the rules around the ruck. ok ive thought about this a bit at different times and these are my ideas to fix the game.
The Ruck: Dummy half runners are making ridiculous amounts of metres from dummy half and we are seeing 2-4 plays on some sets where its all just dummy half running. One of the contributing factors to this is the way the ruck is policed. the first issue is this "movement" rubbish. if a player is pushed backwards it takes longer to get up but if he can push fwd and land fwd he will be able to get up and play the ball. let the tackle complete itself. the only penalty that should be given here is the flop or laying on the player for a ridiculous time. If players are tangled up. give them time to get untangled.
My next problem with the ruck is when the player gets up and often steps forward of to the side. The dummy half grabs the ball and runs straight into the marker who has been deemed to not be square and a penalty is given. My thought here is close enough is good enough. if the marker is up and slightly standing to one side the dummy half should be smart enough to go to the other side where they are likely to make yards where as right now they just go for the marker to draw the penalty.
The Stripping the ball rule: When the one on one strip was introduced i thought it was a good rule. i now submit that i was wrong. the rule should be changed to the ball can be stripped even when there is 2 in the tackle. A majority of tackles are made by 2 players with a 3rd coming in at the end. If the rule was changed to 2 players in the tackle can strip the ball you take the referee out of the play as a majority of tackles only involve the 2 players. I would abolish the illegal stripping rule all together accept the fact that i dont like the ideas of stripping the ball in a gang tackle. I also think making it able for 2 players to strip the ball places a greater emphasis on ball security.
Stripping when the tackle is completed should still be penalised but not if a player has his arms caught up in the tackle. THIS IS NOT A STRIP. the tackled player needs to worry about holding the ball tight rather than anything else first.
The not played at rule is another. i think if the ball touches anyone it should be ruled as played at. this takes the gray out of the matter. this should also apply to a kick. If a kicker is skilled enough to kick the ball into an opposition player and have it go into touch then they deserve the scrum feed.
These are some examples and ive had more but cant think of them at the moment. if you have any others feel free to add the ideas and hopefully someone will see them. The main concept of this is to take the referees out of the game as much as possible and let the 2 teams battle the game out rather than little meaningless penalties changing the game or at least changing the momentum of the game.
