Queensland team Game 1? Have you compiled a full eligibility list @Big Pete?

Starting to formulate around this:

1. K. Ponga
2. X. Coates / C. Oates
3. V. Holmes
4. HTF / D. Gagai
5. S. Cobbo / K. Feldt

6. C. Munster / T. Dearden
7. DCE (not loving this) / S. Walker

8. J. Papalii
9. H Grant / R. Mahoney
10. L. Collins
11. K. Capewell
12. J. Nanai
13. R. Cotter

14. B. Hunt
15. T. Fa'asuamaleaui
16. P. Carrigan
17 ???

Strong cases for Cotter, Carrigan, Tino.
HTF needs to fully recover from recent injury.
Right second row position very weak - bolter is Nanai but a big risk (potential big reward). Kaufusi is over the hill. Could Carrigan play there?
Middling cases for Hess, Gilbert, Fermor, Brimson, Flegler, Molo
Poor cases for Fifita, Fotuaika, Kaufusi, Arrow.

Interested in your thoughts/17?

Nanai is too green. Still has a lot of missed tackles and errors in his game.

Cotter on the other hand has played himself into a jersey. Looks like he can play big minutes easily too.

There's a couple of borderline cases so if you notice any omissions feel free to bring them up. Daejarn Asi for instance is eligible according to the QRL website but I believe he was signed out of New Zealand.

Touch wood but you can lock these positions down

1. Kalyn Ponga
2. Xavier Coates
3. Dane Gagai
4. Valentine Holmes

6. Cameron Munster
7. Daly Cherry-Evans

8. Josh Papalii
9. Harry Grant

The rest is up in the air.

I'm not a huge fan of that centre combination for the Maroons. At this level I feel both are far more suited to the wing, but the stocks are that low it's difficult to think of too many alternatives. One I would consider weighing up is bringing Hamiso into left centre and pushing Holmes to the wing where he's been really effective for the Maroons in the past.

Otherwise it's a toss up between the Cowboys and the Broncos wings: Feldt, Taulagi, Oates & Cobbo. If Cobbo continues on the trajectory he's on he'll be a big part of this team for years to come. He's still very young in his career and has mistakes in him but he's really gained ground these past few weeks. So much so I'm willing to select based on what the candidates dish up in the coming weeks.

The pack formation is going to be key. I'm really curious to see how Billy will put together his middles and whether he'll bring Cotter into the starting team to play that mobile role. I'm also curious to see who they'll partner Papalii with. I'd actually be in favour of somebody like Collins who just plays flat out to try to win those opening exchanges before bringing on an Arrow who can play the long minutes and bolster the pack when he comes on. Fa'asuamalueai is another option and I'm sure his Storm background will work in his favour but I also think having him come off the bench would be a more effective use of him.

I don't love the second row options for Queensland. As it stands I feel the Maroons will play it safe and start with Kaufusi and Capewell which is uninspiring. What I wouldn't give for a Michael Crocker type of backrow. I wouldn't write Nanai off yet but would love to see him keep developing and putting himself in that frame. He's a special talent and if there's one thing Origin has taught us you can't die wondering.

I couldn't believe they named Nanai in an U/19 Origin camp when he's among the best Queensland talent going today.

That is quite a conservative outlook mate.

The form of Valentine Holmes at centre has been irresistible, certainly at the expense of Gagai, who has had an injury interrupted season. I expect Holmes to be named at centre by Slater and the selection team without hesitation. HTF has had injury also, but has been eased back into first grade coming off the bench and demonstrated immediate impact. HTF was very good defensively at centre in game 3 last year, this aspect of his game should not be overlooked.

Queensland have to look to the future, if that means introducing players like Cobbo, Nanai and even dare I say it, Luki, then so be it. The tired, stale players like Kaufusi just won't get it done against the current NSW side.

I think Carrigan fits this outlook nicely also. He appears one of the key reasons for the Broncos turnaround this season. Hoping he is versatile enough to play on an edge.

What is also important is having strong combinations from across the Cowboys, Broncos and Storm teams, who are all in pretty good form. This camaraderie will be a building block for the Slater years I feel.

State of Origin 2022: Billy Slater backs Jeremiah Nanai to make Maroons history

David Fifita had played just 22 NRL games when he made his Maroons debut. Now a North Queensland rookie, just 13 games into his career could replace him.

Queensland coach Billy Slater has hailed the brilliance of Jeremiah Nanai and says the Cowboys rookie is in the mix to become the most inexperienced Maroons’ back-row debutant in Origin history.

The Cowboys’ stunning resurgence could lead to an Origin selection bonanza with the Fab Five of Nanai, Heilum Luki, Kyle Feldt, Reuben Cotter and Valentine Holmes in contention for Maroons jumpers for the series opener on June 8.

The ultimate bolter would be Nanai, who can enhance his claims for a Queensland debut with a barnstorming display on Sunday against Wests Tigers at Suncorp — the scene of his hat-trick heroics in the Cowboys’ 38-12 belting of Brisbane in Round 3.

With misfiring Titans star David Fifita (knee) racing the clock for Origin, Slater confirmed teenage sensation Nanai is a genuine consideration for a maiden Maroons jumper after his electric start to the 2022 premiership.

The 19-year-old has seven tries from nine games and has impressed with his cool head, skill and fast feet on the fringes, as evidenced by his quick stepping to score in last week’s 36-16 rout of the Knights.

Cowboys legend Matt Scott had played just 14 NRL games when he made his Queensland debut in 2006, while Fifita was 22 matches into his Broncos career when he was blooded by then Maroons coach Kevin Walters in 2019.

But Nanai, who plays his 14th top-grade game this week against the Tigers, would be Queensland’s most inexperienced back-rower if he gets the nod from Slater for Origin I at Homebush’s Accor Stadium.

“I am watching several Queensland players closely, not only the experienced guys but also some young guys who have jumped out of the ground and are making a noise for themselves,” Slater said.

“The two young back-rowers Nanai and Luki (aged 21) have been a breath of fresh air for Cowboys and Queensland fans.

“In terms of their age ... I believe you are ready when you consistently perform the actions that you want to see in an Origin player.

“Although Jeremiah is only 19 and has played about 13 games, he has been really exciting.

“He has brought some fresh energy to the right-hand side of the Cowboys. He loves chasing kicks and I see that as a great sign of someone wanting to be in the game and in the action.

“You don’t see many back-rowers chasing kicks like Jeremiah does.

“I don’t look at age, I look at actions. That will tell me if someone deserves an opportunity in Origin.

“Just because you are 28, it doesn’t mean you belong in the Origin team.

“I’m not concerned about Jeremiah’s lack of NRL games played.”

Nanai is not the only Cowboy on Slater’s radar.

Feldt debuted last season and is a frontline contender for a wing berth, while incumbent Maroon Holmes is set for a move infield to wear the Queensland No.3 jumper after his sizzling shift to centre at the Cowboys this season.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow impressed in his Maroons debut in last year’s decider, although ‘The Hammer’ is fighting to retain his Origin spot as he makes his way back from injury on the Cowboys bench.

Cotter, meanwhile, has emerged as North Queensland’s ironman and is tailor made for Origin with his workrate, averaging 125 metres per game and amassing 95 tackles in the past fortnight — including 54 against the Eels.

“There is a lot to like about the Cowboys and their improvement is good for Queensland’s Origin stocks,” Slater said.

“I like the fact Reuben Cotter has gone through adversity, he’s had a few knee reconstructions. He is one guy I have enjoyed watching over the past six weeks. He’s a Queenslander and I want our players playing consistent football with the type of physical and mental toughness that Reuben shows.

“Val has done a brilliant job in the centres. His leg speed makes him dangerous and he is playing well in a vibrant team.

“We haven’t had great depth in that centre position in recent years so Val is a real boost for us in that area.”

That's why I locked Val in at 4, I can't see Slater going away from it. However I'm a big believer in playing players in positions where they're comfortable and the only left wingers Queensland have is Taulagi and Oates. I agree with the forward thinking assessment which is why Oates should only be considered as a back-up. I think Taulagi is a handy option but truth be told I'm more excited about a HTF/Val edge than a Val/Taulagi edge.

If Cobbo comes into the team, it would have to be at the expense of Coates who'd have to shift to the left wing. Coates has played there before for Melbourne so it's not entirely out of the question, it just depends on whether Slater wants to maxmimise Coates' performance. Billy absolutely loves him as a lot of the Storm boys do which is why they re-signed him ASAP.

I'll admit I'm conservative when it comes to the forwards. I don't think you pick your starting pack prematurely or play players out of position. I'm happy with the trajectory Carrigan is on, but he's barely a lock forward these days let alone an edge forward. If he does make the team it should only be at prop forward. I don't have an issue with selecting Nanai or Luki (or both) but I think they'd be best served coming off the bench.

That's a pretty good team. I was pretty confident of a NSW win but with injuries to Latrell & Turbo. The good form of the Broncos & Cows coinciding with the emergence of some talented young Qld'ers, this series is 50/50 IMO.
