Howell I go at fullback? Utility steps into Zillman's shoes
Peter Fitzgerald

Raiders utility David Howell has pledged a desire to be Canberra's permanent back-up to William Zillman at fullback following his successful top-grade debut in the role last weekend. Howell played fullback against the New Zealand Warriors on Saturday night, his first time in the No1 jersey since his junior days playing in the Illawarra region.
Regularly a winger/centre, the 23-year-old admitted to being sceptical about his new role but enjoyed it so much he hoped coach Neil Henry would call on him any time the position was vacant.
And with Zillman recovering from a knee reconstruction which is set to sideline him for the rest of the 2007 NRL season and potentially the start of 2008, the opening is there for Howell.
"I thought I played OK but I really enjoyed it which was the main thing for me," he said. "I wasn't too nervous before the game, more excited I think, but I wasn't sure how everything was going to go.
"The best thing was that the coaching staff didn't put too much pressure on me so hopefully that's the case again this weekend."
Henry has again named Howell at fullback for Sunday's round 24 clash against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.
Howell believed the versatility required to play fullback would add another dimension to his game.
"With Zilly out for a while I hope I'm a chance to keep playing there because not only did I enjoy it but I think it will really help me when I go back too," he said.
"I wouldn't say I prefer fullback to the wing or centre, I've only had one real game there in a few years, but it's certainly something I had fun doing and would like to do again."
Howell will again link up with wingers David Milne and Brett Kelly as Canberra's back three when it travels to Brisbane this weekend.
The combination, which few thought would be required at the beginning of the season, impressed against the Warriors.
New Zealand scored twice on Milne's wing but both tries were through kicks, not a direct result of poor defence.
The three only had one week of training together in position before the Warriors match and Howell was relieved the performance impressed Henry.
"I thought we went really well and we've all been selected there again for this week so we must have done something right," he said.
Howell has struggled with injuries throughout 2007 and he is still not 100 per cent fit.
He played the majority of matches at the start of the season but failed to play in the NRL between rounds eight and 21.
The main groin injury - which medical staff initially thought was an abdominal strain, then osteitis pubis and then the effect of poor hip rotation - was still hampering him yesterday to the extent he went to the doctor last night to again get his hips scanned.
He has been doubling his dose of anti-inflammatory tablets close to match day to help ease the hip pain and has also struggled with a stomach injury since returning to the top grade.
"It's very frustrating, still not knowing the reason why the stomach is getting sore," Howell said.
"The groin is always sore to some degree, it's still playing up a little bit.
"I'm still pretty sore now, three days after the game, but I'll be right to go again on Sunday."
The Raiders leave for Brisbane on Saturday.
They have lost their past two clashes against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium but only by a combined total of eight points.
SUNDAY
Canberra Raiders v Brisbane Broncos, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, 2pm. TV Time: Live on Fox Sports3.

Feel sorry for him his still injured and no answer, But his is not a starting winger or centre for 2008, backup yes but at $200k that's a lot of coin for backup, maybe a fullback if the Campo/Dobbo/Carney thing doesn't work and we use zillman as half.

At least he's not spending his cash on calls to Wayne Bennett.

I think his good attitude is something that endears him with the coaches. You've got to give him credit for that.

I wouldn't say that any backline positions are set in stone for next year and those who are on the park have 2 more games to play themselves into a starting role. Natural ability has never been worth more than good attitude i.e. Goodwin vs Tongue.

I was more than a bit sceptical of Goodwin making it in first grade at the beginning of the year and said so here a number of times. He is now 23 and IMO has shown zero capability in being able to perform on a consistent basis (in either Firsts or reggies).

Confidence and arrogance on the field may give you the upper hand when things are going well, but if you take that attitude into training and carry on like a tool off the field you won't win too much support from those who matter. Brett Mullins got away with it because he was a freak, but Goodwin has achieved jack sh!t in his career - even though he may think otherwise.

My big concern with Bronx is that he might drag Todd Carney down or even away from the club if the coach gets sick of his attitude. I may get crucified for this, but right now I'd take Howell over Goodwin any day. He needs to grow up.

I don't know too much about Goodwin other than the rumours that he has an attitude problem and seems to think the world owes him because of his talent. You only have to look at the comp this year to realise that attitude is what wins games, every team has enough talent to win if they play 80 minutes with the right attitude.

Howell might not be a game breaker but he is solid and a hard worker which is what we need.

Are we really paying Howell 200K a year?

I've heard it in the past, does anyone have a source?

I just can't believe that management would be that daft.

It is true. I heard 220.000 a season. Thanx to Elliott.

I'm not sure if that figure is correct (I hope not) but we need to remember that from next season the average NRL salary will be $164,000 p.a. ($4.1M between 25 players). Given he's played a fair whack of first grade in the two season prior to this I wouldn't be surprised if he was on a fair bit over $150K.

Hmm, I thought that's what frawley was on - reportedly our highest paid player.

Please tell me frawley wasn't on more than that!!

OK that's the ballpark figure I thought (not that I've ever seen a reputable source reported anywhere Lime_Green), so $220,000 would basically make Howell our second highest paid player...and now our highest.

Could be true if Elliott was involved, but I find it pretty hard to believe considering the cash guys like Withers and Graham would be on.

Whilst I desperately want to see Bronx there, I was very impressed by him last weekend.

Fullback with a beard 'eh?

Sounds so crazy it just might work! IMO that's the thing that's been missing from Zillmans game.

Management called him a priority signing... Elliot believed he was unlucky to miss out on rep footy..... No wonder why we're a fringe top 8 club at best... The club is run by f**kin iddiots.

Yep we were waiting on a heap of players to resign eg: graham, weyman, schif, chalk, campese, purtell and a heap of others, Elliott picthed to management that signing howell would get the others to sign, with all the speculation of who would coach them at the time, Management was scared and offered him a sh*te load to sign, more than he would have got anywhere else.

Hopefully i really hope these type's of deals are in the past, and from the looks of things henry is more prudent in regards to skill vs money.
