Huddersfield rugby league players quizzed over rape

Six rugby league players have been arrested after a woman was raped at a Newcastle hotel.

The men, from the Huddersfield Giants Super League squad, were staying at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel as part of a pre-season tour.

Northumbria Police said a 22-year-old woman made a complaint following an incident in the early hours of Tuesday.

The force said the men were being questioned on suspicion of rape and the inquiry was in the "early stages".

The team arrived at the hotel on Monday for a team-building exercise and training.

Huddersfield Giants managing director Richard Thewlis said there would be an internal inquiry into the allegation.

In a statement on the club's website, he said: "The club has fully co-operated with all requests made of us by the police and we are now awaiting further information from them."

Firstly, the players may well be the victim in all this and are certainly innocent till proven otherwise.

And secondly, this is a rugby league forum not the rape victims support service so I'm commenting on the rugby league side of this situation. The club will be affected by all this and their performances may indicate this. That's all.

What's so hard to understand. This is s rugby league forum. We discuss the game of rugby league. This has nothing to do with the game of rugby league except in how it might affect the club on the field. If you want to feel sorry for a supposed victim of an unproven crime go ahead but do it somewhere else.

Because it involves a rugby league team. It will affect their season. They may even lose the players allegedly involved. Whadayafrickinthink.

Yeah, it will be a real shame, not only for the players, the Club....BUT more so the image of the game. AND that does not include the trauma it would have on the alleged victim. Might even affect her life.
That's whadifreakingthink....owsaboutewewhadayareckineh.

Well find a forum about her and comment on it there. As it is I'll talk about rugby league on a rugby league forum. If you had ever even posted here ever once ever I might consider your views on British RL valid, but...

Oh I understand now...valid points can only be made by the regular contributors.
AND only if they are supportive of alleged 'evil doers', who after all, according to you can act as they please. No wonder the code is struggling with the key members of the fraternity not able to comprehend the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Seems to be contagious doesn't it. BUT as Bazal Fawlty says 'Ssssssh, don't mention the war'.....Bury your head, it might go away....whadayareckineh.
Wouldn't it be ironic if the place where the great game was born ( "...the clubs here represented decide to form a Northern Rugby Football Union and pledge themselves to push forward, without delay, its establishment on the principle of payment for broken-time only" - proclaimed at the The George Hotel, Huddersfield, West Yorks. on August 29, 1895.) was a major player in its downfall.

I know what is right and what is wrong. If the players are found guilty they will have done wrong. At present they are are innocent. It's no wonder the game is in the state it's in when so-called fans label players as criminals before they even go to trial, assuming that even happens. And what's more, invade a forum about rugby league and not only lecture rugby league supporters about a non rugby league issue but accuse them of condoning sexual assault when no such thing has happened. And just a tip, if you want to slander people who are innocent until proven guilty don't be surprised to find yourself banned for defamation, not to mention slandering other posters.

You have got to be JOKING!!!!!. Who has been defamed..Not one name has been mentioned in this thread about the alleged perpetrators or the victim...You are worrying about the players and what will happen to the Club if they are charged and found guilty...Not one word of sympathy about the 'alleged victim'. If it was your sister, or your daughter, how would you react...And let's face it, the alleged victim is someones daughter, maybe someone's sister

Slander...Banned for slander? C'mon....Get that defensive shield up. Defend the indefensible...you can do it...GET REAL MATEY....
Incidentally this thread is about Huddersfield players and an alleged rape. Is that really a Rugby League issue?

Invade a Rugby League forum? Do you think this is a rugby league issue?

It will be interesting to see, in some cases where sports stars have been rocked by scandal (Shane Warne and Leon Pryce come to mind) the playing field is their escape and they focus more on what they do best.

In my opinion, when Pryce had a court case hanging over him i thought he played better than ever, when he was exonerated his form dropped in a big way.

It remains to be seen if and how this effects the Giants on field performances, hopefully this rape charges incident won't have a negative impact on their season.

Rugby stars in the clear over Newcastle rape

May 14 2010 by Lisa Hutchinson, Evening Chronicle

SIX Super League rugby players arrested and quizzed on suspicion of rape during a pre-season training tour in Newcastle will not face charges, police have confirmed.

The players, from Huddersfield Giants Super League squad, were questioned after a 22-year-old woman said she had been raped in the early hours of January 19 and contacted police.

The unnamed players were initially bailed while inquiries continued and their bail was later extended.

But now they have been told by police that they face no further action.

The rugby squad had been staying at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel, Newcastle, after arriving on January 18 for a three-day team building exercise and training on a nearby artificial pitch at Gosforth Park.

At the time, police would not say if the alleged attack had taken place at the hotel, but would only say the rape allegedly took place in the “Gosforth area” of the city.

Every member of the first team squad had travelled to Tyneside for the team-building session as the Giants prepared for their Super League XV opener at home to Bradford Bulls on February 5.

A Giants spokesman said: “Huddersfield Giants have received notification that the six players facing allegations surrounding the pre season Newcastle training camp have no further action to face.

“The six unnamed players were bailed to appear on June 11 pending further investigation but they have now received confirmation formally that all potential charges are dismissed and no further action is to be taken.”

Giants managing director Richard Thewlis said: “This was the outcome that our own investigation indicated would be the case and whilst there was a degree of frustration on our part as to the time taken to get to this position we, and our players, recognise that the authorities have to follow process – which we complied with every step of the way – and that these matters take time to conclude.

“Everyone at the club can now look forward to focusing on the remainder of the season and to achieving success in the Engage Super League.”

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Following a police investigation, all six men now face no further action.”
