Hunt To Broncos

Dragons playmaker Ben Hunt has been linked to a return to his old club, the Broncos, which would see Brisbane and St George Illawarra split his salary.
On an estimated $1.2 million a year, Hunt’s big-money to the Red V has not turned the Dragons into top-four contenders.

Hunt has played in the halves - where his partnership with Corey Norman came under scrutiny - at hooker and off the interchange for the joint-venture club

This whole idea of paying half is ridiculous, especially given that the Broncos want to off-load a number of players; some of whom may be suitable for a swap with the Dragons.

Come on Millward, get on the ball and do your job.

Millward is just riding out his last days in the job (well at least we hope).

Until both clubs have new coaches confirmed, nothing will happen in terms of list management for 2021 and beyond. Imagine the next coaches are going to want a say. With all parties in this rumor still under contract, there really isn't any need to rush this anyway.

Hunt still wants to be a 7? But I bet any money the Broncos are looking to have him back to play 9 (given they are short of options in this position and Deardon being the future in the halves).

What about Norman? Wonder if the Widdop return (and consequent swap) is still on the cards?

We don't want/need Widdop or a high priced five-eighth. Been there and done that. Just off-load or swap Norman for a prop. SGI contract ended and his new contract with the new club. Same goes for the prop we swap him for.

Dragons recruitment and retention update

The St George Illawarra Dragons have provided the following update regarding the futures of Jack de Belin and Ben Hunt.

The Dragons can confirm that de Belin has agreed in principle to re-sign with the Dragons beyond the 2020 season, pending the outcome of his imminent court matter.

The terms of de Belin's contract will remain confidential while the matter remains before the court.

St George Illawarra wish to also clarify that conjecture over Ben Hunt's future at the Red V is completely inaccurate. The Dragons' recruitment committee have never discussed the prospect of releasing the Queensland and Australia representative to another club.

Hunt remains contracted to the Red V until at least the end of the 2023 season.

Hunt is the least of our problems. The halves in general. I was never sold on Norman but let’s see what an experienced coach can do with them, if Griffin gets the nod. Norman arguably played his best football with Brisbane after being brought through the ranks by Griffin. Was poor at Parra. But let’s not forget the failures of McGregor to get consistent good football from any of his halves pairings. He couldn’t make Marshall and Widdop work, not Widdop and Hunt or Hunt and Norman. I don’t think it’s down to the players, all three have been brilliant at times, just not consistently over long periods at our club under Mary. Hunt is among our best performers every week. We need to solve problems up front and defensively in general first. Our halves aren’t the issue. Look at the way the Titans rolled us within four minutes at the end of last week’s game. They went the length of the field twice to score. There is a softness in our pack that hasn’t been diagnosed for a long time. Last year’s ladder position flattered us. We were easily the worst team in the comp and the coaching change needed to happen then. This season has seen more damage done to the confidence of the key spine players. The only positive has been how Dufty has responded by expanding his attacking game.

It should be noted that Owen concentrated on Owl breeding season instead of giving a hoot about this ridiculous bullshit.

Hunt and Debelin both need to be out of consideration as future signings for our club.Hunt does not have the mental and emotional strength to be in a leadership role. His on field profile drops very quickly even when things are going well. This results in him not being able to string consecutive plays together.Watch Cameron Smith and how he strings consecutive plays together.Hunts negative body language tells the story. Similar to Milford.
DeBelin should have been stood down until the whole affair was settled. Our totally non professional management have allowed this situation to be an excuse for poor performance, poor recruiting, poor coaching, poor club profile, very poor culture.
Such a shame to see great young players like Lomax be caught in such a leaderless, toxic environment.
The only way forward I see is to sign 2 or 3 hard head forwards and bring all the young juniors through.Tamou,Tapau,Hetherington would do nicely.Ramsay, Feagais x2,Sullivan,Sailor,Dufty,Lomax,Rava etc would be safe and confident with that engine room. Our cap should handle it as well once Norman ,Merrin, Aiken Frizzell Simsx2 etc are moved on.

Tend to agree with this line of thought. I feel our style of football and lack of steel and psychological dominance in the forwards offers our halves little space to work; and as you point out, it hasn’t for a long time, irrespective of the combinations we’ve had.

These are NOT Biily Smith or Tommy Raudonikus type halves so why do we expect it of them? Ain’t going to happen! Whilst their aloofness certainly irritates at times, if we provided them more forward power and a more thought out game plan to work with we could compliment their skill set and possibly see different results. I’d argue there has been some evidence of that lately without the forward dominance.

Their here now, their not going anywhere so make it work, irrespective of whose getting paid what.

Agree
maybe a new coach will be able to change this
clearly not Mary or Deano

A lot of players might come good with the right coach, right game plan , playing to strengths etc
also need to know if you are a non performer u are gone ie what Madge did
Listening Corey??

Sure believe what you want. Last week a report stated that Hunt had taken up the option to remain for an extra year. Then this week we are shopping him around. Good luck to you if you are believing reports in the media.
Your view might be more realistic if it was the Club that took up the option. Hunt taking up the option is just a way to ensure he gets his huge salary for as long as possible.

If Hunt wants out and the Club is happy for a swap with a suitable Broncos player, then so be it. But please, non of this subsidising the Hunt salary rubish.

My view? It's the stuff that was printed in the media - nothing to do with my view. 2 different stories.

You are choosing to believe the one that suits your agenda and will bag the club when it doesn't happen.

Hunt is a State of Origin plus Australian player. Like many at our club he has been ruined by the peanut. Let’s not shop him till we see what a new coach can do with him. He’s certainly not the first or only one.
