Hurricanes "Reloaded"

Has been a while since an update on the Hurricanes in Jamaica, but after a hiatus in late 2012/early 2013, we are back bigger and better than ever with a fresh view on where we are going.

We had to assess a number of issues relating to our goal of travelling and playing in the US competitions, namely finances for travel, accommodation, visas etc but also wanted to see how things played out in the US with the 2 comps. That being said we have been working hard behind the scenes to rebrand ourselves with a new logo and a soon to be released new website. We have also set ourselves a 5 year plan to develop Jamaican and Caribbean rugby league talent and have been able to confirm at least 2 touring teams to Jamaica for 2014 (official announcement shortly).

On the management staff, we have 5 Jamaican people now working for the Hurricanes Rugby League in the following roles: General Manager (Roy Calvert), Communications Manager (Jeanel Anderson), Corporate Relations Manager (Renee Lee), Academy/Development Management - Surrey (Robert Rodney) and Administration Manager (Mesha Calvert). The intention is to also include a Development Manager in Middlesex County also.

Along with the new website , Jeanel is now actively updating facebook (Hurricanes Rugby League Jamaica), and twitter - @HurricanesRL so be sure to link in and keep up-to-date with movements. Roy will be featuring on Jamaican radio consistently to update fans locally and internationally (via online stream).

On the playing front, our very successful Academy program for school players aged 14-19 will commence this weekend with trials for the Middlesex County players (Spanish Town, St Catherine, Portmore etc.) and then next week we have the Surrey Country trials (Kingston and St Andrew). Pics will follow from those events.

For our seniors we are looking to follow Jacksonville Axemen's lead by establishing a 9s series with affiliated teams. This will prove to be the basis for senior players selection into the Hurricanes senior squad. 3 tournaments are being planned in November this year for the affiliated teams, with the Hurricanes top 22 squad to be selected after the conclusion, with training commencing in January. Games are being planned in May and June 2014, with 2 teams travelling to Jamaica and we will look to travel to USA for 1 week to play a few games also.

Prior to the unveiling of the website, we have launched a campaign to equip 2 gyms. We have the space available to equip the 2 premises, yet access to purchasing the appropriate equipment to train our players is quite restrictive. We are appealing to the global rugby league community to assist us in providing better training environments for young Jamaican rugby league players by going to http://www.gofundme.com/43sqt8 and assisting us financially to achieve our goals. Any donation, no matter how big or small is very well received. If you can promote the cause to others that would also be appreciated.

So that is a little wrap on the Hurricanes and where we have been, what we have been doing behind the scenes and where we are headed.

Hurricanes to di worl!!!
