I know what is the problem!!!

I know what is the problem but Iam not sure how to fix it.

The problem is----the difference between a good day and a bad day is about a 80% swing in form, and every month we have a shocker, a good game,a brillant game and a average game.

Now take the Drags, the difference between a great game and a bad game is about a 10% form swing. This allows them to win 90% of their games.

Iam starting to get the feeling that our top 25 are really not good enough to play consistent football and we the fan base and the media rate them way higher than what they really are. Okay no Lotte,Ellis and Lawrence makes a big difference but once again the good teams over come these things.

They will not get anywhere till they learn to deliver the same quality week in and week out--I mean the good stuff!!!

Really smart post. You are right, can never imagine the Dragons putting in a totally woeful performance. They may get beaten but they seem mentally prepared. Last night...who was in charge? And where was the committment - apart from the bench! Anyway, another week, another game crappy feeling after a game against Souths

I missed the game last night but by all reports we were pretty ordinary again. If our commitment does not change now I doubt we will reach the semi-finals.Like Parramatta last year, being a favourite for the title based on the previous years results doesn't mean success on the field in the current season.Hopefully all is not lost and the team will kick into gear for the remainder...

I agree 110% and the the Sydney Sun Herald today, Gus writes:
In the first half, the Tigers looked like blokes who had planned something better for their Saturday night entertainment, only to get a last-minute phone call from the boss demanding they come back to work.

They were present in body, but not in mind. The quality of their work was unprofessional. Their attack went sideways and backwards. They resorted to poorly executed kicks trying to pluck a miracle out of nowhere. Their defence was brittle and non-committed. It was really poor.

Both teams could learn from the NRL's defending premiers.

The thing that sets the St George-Illawarra Dragons apart from the rest of the competition is their consistent intensity. When you watch the Dragons play, you know exactly what you are going to get. The same goes for the individual members of the team. Consistency from week to week, consistency from minute to minute - they compete on every play, every minute, for the full 80 minutes. The Dragons set the standard for this attitude and attitude control.

Both South Sydney and the Tigers can match it with the best of them; but they can also match it with the worst of them.

Ellis is the missing link, I believe, he toughens them up. I would stick with Galloway, Fifita, Woods and Gibbs as the 4 front rowers in the starting 17. I would also start with Big Red and Woods up front and have Gibbs and Ellis in the 2nd row, we need Gibbs as the defensive back rower with Ellis.

As for Galloway, in the Sunday Telegraph today, I laughed when I read this,
while the likes of Keith Galloway, Aiden Tolman, Tim Mannah and Trent Merrin will vie for front-row positions on the bench
please no, NSW can not afford to have a prop who does not run onto the ball and believe me, Galloway does not do it enough.

Last thing from today's papers also makes me think about the Tigers and super coach and that is the piece about front rowers
Look at Melbourne and how they continually get front-rowers who are considered 'OK' from other clubs and upskill them so they become integral parts of a very strong team,
If Giibs goes to Melbourne, he may end up playing at a higher level, who knows but they can do it, Sheens can't. Sheens didn't even give Ryan Tandy a go did he? He heads south and plays in a grand final.

I'll give you a hint on how to fix it....get a new coach with a new attitude and get rid of some of Sheens' favourites who have been getting a free ride for years in first grade. In eight years here he hasn't got it right. He has to be made accountable much more so than the players.

Mate you know and know that will never happen so live with it we have Sheens for another three and half years . He just has to find the key to turn them on week in and week out

Maybe it's simply a case of we don't have the right group, TBH I was reasonably happy with the team last night, b4 the game that is, so maybe time to get the broom out & do some sweeping. I hope Sheens has had some accountability put into his contract though.

With so many young forwards, consistency is always going to be an issue.

Also, at some stage newer blood especially in the backs needs to be introduced. Fortunately we have players in the U20s who are good.

Finally, the pattern of sack the coach etc etc is continually repeated after a loss.

Sheens has the squad he wants -

He has said this on numerous occasions he has built the squad he wants.

So if he has the team he wants, its his problem.

Granted we have had injuries this year, but that's not an excuse, its a reason to have a broad based squad.

Every team has injuries at some stage of the comp and we dont have any players on origin duty (surprise surprise) so he doesnt have that excuse either.

Our top 25 as a whole is weak compared with the majority of the other 15 NRL clubs.
But in saying that I still believe we have the worlds best player at 5/8, a very good up and coming halfback (Robert Lui), the second best hooker in the world (pity the rest of the side can`t penetrate the defence enough to let him show it on a regular basis), one prop who isn`t as conistently good as he should be, but still deserved to be selected for NSW and some very good up and coming forwards who aren`t seasoned enough to produce their best week in week out just yet, but are slowly getting there. We have a world class second rower in Gareth Ellis, a lock who doesn`t have a lot of variety to his game, but does give his all for us each week and two outside backs, YES only two outside backs who are both currently injured who are better than average first graders.
Our 1-5 last night would simply not make the starting line up for ANY other NRL club. I`m a fan of Mitch Brown and I still believe he can become a very good first grader, but he`s not going to be anything better than average as a fullback, he needs to realise he has the size and SPEED to be a very good centre or winger, but to do that he needs to get much more involved and play much more aggressively on a regular basis.

As a whole our side isn`t all that good, BUT we have the world class players in the Marshall and Farah who can help us beat any rival NRL side IF the rest of the side do their job and give these great attacking players their chance to do what they do best.

We have the world's best 5/8 when he is on, we have an average 5/8 when he is not.

He is a great footballer, BUT as good as he is he cannot be the one setting up the play, creating the line breaks and try assists as well as being the ball runner. I lost count of how many times Benji, Farah and Lui were trying to create attacking opportunities and had NO ONE running onto the football. Only two of them Murdoch-Masila and occasionally Dwyer put their hands up and ran onto the ball at pace, what were the rest of the backs and back rowers doing ??? Pretty much the same when defending, Murdoch-Masila and Dwyer were pretty much the only two who were prepared to hit with their shoulder and try and cause a turn over, Galloway on the odd occasion, but his lack of constant aggression was evident and only has himself to blame for missing a rep jersey because of it.

What I love about Benji is also what I hate. I am not being critical of him, I just think when Lui does mature and takes pressure of Benji, we might see Benji run more and worry less about trying to set EVERY play up.

R2, whether you sack the coach or some players, the fact is, we haven't kicked on since 05, we got a good end result last year, which should have been a great catalyst for this year, but it doesn't appear to be the case (we have had injuries, but so have others)? It's still early & I haven't lost hope, but I have said it before, if nothing changes, then nothing changes.
IMO, its not the talent that is the problem, its the attitude, the senior players need to have a look at themselves, look at the game on Saturday, to see what I mean. When was the last time any of the senior guys did what Fifita did? And that first half, well that was below social footy standards. Some of the players seem to do just enough to get picked again next week & thats it. They are in there comfort zone & that's what happens when you have long term management not being pushed to excell (KPI's). Something is not right.
As for the under 20's, (I don't watch them), I would have thought if anyone was a standout, they would have been seen by now, as we have tried a few?
