Ice Hockey Q - CanadianSteve maybe?

Out with some friends last weekend.

One of guys in the group [didn't know him] was talking to another fella about a hockey incident that happened many years ago. Here's what I overheard:

A Canadian player by the first name of Clinton [couldn't remember his last name - wasn't an easy one - but he was the goalkeeper] was involved in a collision with another player when that other player's ice skates sliced open this Clint fellas juglar vein, bleeding profusely all over the ice, right their in front of a packed house of thousands. Cameras picked this incident up live apparently. The guy lived according to the guy telling the story. He also mentioned that several spectators fainted, puked and one had a hear attack at the sight of what had just taken place.

Anyone know anything further about this incident?

I'd forgotten about that, I never really heard much about it. I won't watch that video though, I can't stand graphic stuff like that. I always turn off the Joe Theisman broken leg or other such replays when I know they're coming up on TV.

Goalies wear a protective neck piece that hangs below their mask, and also a wraparound throat protector I think. (I know younger kids do in youth hockey.) I'm not sure if those things resulted from Malarchuk's injury or not.

They did steve. After Clint suffered that sickening gash to his throat they NHL introduced the protector.
