“They changed their name to the Perth City Reds for the 1997 Super League season,[2] and adopted a jersey of red, white and black. Although the club had made some promising signings, such as Rodney Howe and Robbie Kearns, the crushing $10 million debt that hung over the club (from having to pay the airfares for all visiting teams) at the end of the season led to Super League axing the Perth Reds on 1 October 1997.”
Lol, how much factually incorrect can you get in one post!

they were called perth reds, not perth city reds
the jerseys were red and black with a yellow colour. No white
you dont run up $10mill debt in 3 years on travel lol, not unless they were chartering private jets for every player!
the so called debt was run up due to news ltds inflated SL salaries. and the amount has been disputed by Puddy who was on the board.
thats not why they got axed

Lol

So Tony sage is running out of cash covering the glory’s losses which this year will add up to 3 million dollars so that’s one owner down
yeh he’s only worth $800million, that $3mill will be crippling him!
besides I don’t want him anywhere near an nrl club! He’s driving the once very successful Glory into the ground.

‘Sage is believed to be worth more than $800 million, and he sees no problems with obtaining the $20 million start-up fund needed to establish an NRL club in Perth.’

Can someone bring Backdoor Benny into this ensemble
Please
Sage and Elias, the dream team for any new club lol I wonder if Gallop kept a straight face when he said this?

’Gallop said after the meeting with Sage and Elias: "The merits of a team out of Perth are obvious and this development continues to build their case as one of the leading contenders.

"It was good to meet Tony and Benny. They bring a unique combination of rugby league and business experience to the table.’

..then why didn't he let ARL die?!
If ARL was in such a position of strength then why didn't they go at it alone in 1998?

There's no way the ARL would have given Murdoch a 50% stake in the game unless they were in an extremely dire position.

Would you give up 50% of your house to an enemy if they had no leverage over you?

Chortles into his coco. Dont make me show you the 1995-1997 crowd avgs again!
I like that they had some decent crowds but that doesn't mean fans.
A new team attracts a crowd, after 10 years you know how many were fans.

You will always get a sugar hit at the start, an exciting new curiosity.

So

A new team attracts a crowd, after 10 years you know how many were fans.

So you’re judging the reds on a fanbase that never got chance to develop? Or are you a Nostradamus and knew what the crowd avg would have been in 2005 if they hadnt been culled? I’m not sure the point you are making here.
where the reds crowds terrible in comparison to the rest of the competition? No
did they show real and genuine potential for a successful club? Yes
is any of that relevant to 30 years later? Not really

like I said money and fans are not going to be a WA clubs problem, signing a good first few years squad is.
