I'll toss in this suggestion for a revamp if the Eagles go bust. That would leave 14 teams but with noone on the North side nor in Gosford. What to do?
Two clubs, Roosters and Bulldogs, have given up their geographic connection so why not propose (not force) that the Bulldogs go to Gosford and the Roosters go to North Sydney.
The Roosters almost went to Campbelltown 15 years ago so this change would not be all that drastic. They have a strong playing list with plenty of financial support but no juniors. With the whole North Shore to work with they could develop something.
The Bulldogs are on the move and Gosford is a bit drastic, but it is a growth area with very strong junior potential and a great stadium. A successful team would see the full house sign up regularly at Northpower.
Two other clubs could then really bite the bullet. the Wests Tigers move permanently to Campbelltown. It will happen sooner of later. Now the big one. Saints play all their games at their revamped stadium in Wollongong. I know it is further to go for the St George fans than the SFS but if they are going to play out of their district is that much worse?
I stress all of these moves should be voluntary if the Eagles go under.
The set-up would then be six teams in Sydney (North Shore, the Roosters; outer west Penrith; west and north west Parramatta; inner suburbs, the Rabbits; south, the Sharks; and south-west, the Tigers). Plus Central Coast, Wollongong, Newcastle, Melbourne, Brisbane, North Queensland, Canberra and New Zealand.
Each Sydney club would have a reasonable area and the provincial centres would have full-time teams. We could build up that local support with all the large junior nurseries having a full-time team in their district.
If things worked out then the expansion to a sixteen competition could take place in another five years or so with a second Brisbane team plus say Perth or Wellington.
I know this would never happen but just some ideas to stimulate a discussion. d
