If we used the AFL system...

...and all teams who won this weekend won their games (so it's just hypothetical):

Week One
Melbourne (4) > St George Illawarra (1)
Canterbury (2) > Gold Coast (3)
Parramatta (8) > Manly (5)
Brisbane (6) > Newcastle (7)
Week Two
Gold Coast vs Brisbane
St George Illawarra vs Parramatta
Both Round One NRL Matches
Possible Week Three (if results went the same way they did this weekend)
Melbourne vs Brisbane
Canterbury vs Parramatta

Could possibly be the same in the NRL Preliminaries.
Sort of interesting. Of course it's all hypotheticals.

Big difference is that Gold Coast and St George would have Week Two at home where at next week they will be away.

The Macintyre system wasn't a complete failure this year thanks to Parra. But still makes no sense that regular season positions mean absolutely nothing in Week Two.

So 26 weeks of winning goes down the drain after one loss?

If you have great players then why play hard all season, just relax most of the season, keep the legs fresh and turn it on just enough to finishing 6th or 7th.

Yeah I am bias, and both systems have positives and negatives but at the very least the Dragons and Titans should be at home next week. They earned it over 26 weeks.

If the Dragons wanted a home final they should have won at home against the team that ran 8th. They have no one to blame but themselves for having a tough road to the Grand Final, the McIntyre system does all it can do to reward the highest ranked teams.

You lost mate, to a side that finished 8th on your home ground that was SOOOO fkn important to you. So what should you get for losing? Another opportunity? Sure, you finished first, should you get to play it where you want? No fkn way. Enjoy your trip. learn to not choke in semis and you'll find the semi final system is just fine when you actually bother to win a game.

Semi finals is about rewarding sides that win, if you win and you had a good regular season your fine...If you lose, bad luck hey...

Or you could just beat the 8th ranked side at home? Stop making excuses.

No whinging.

1 v 8. That's the best advantage you could get. If you lose, badluck.

McIntyre rewards 1 and 2 better than the AFL.

1 v 4 isn't enough reward. Why should 8 get an easier game against 5?
AFL rewards the bottom 4 more and the top 4.

McIntyre is a better reward system for the Top 2.

Same thing happened last year when Storm lost to the Warriors and still managed to make it to the g/f.
You just have to move on and accept what we have. I'm sure Bennett will be telling his team just that.
Finals are all about winning.

Firstly, the fact that all these threads are appearing proves that the Mcintyre system has to go, anything that takes the focus away from the onfield events is not good. Secondly, the AFL system is much better because it is just like the game of Rugby League, Simple, easy to understand and you know what you get. Each position from the Home and Away series is rewarded accordingly;

1 & 2 - 1st week Home Final/Second Chance
3 & 4 - 1st week Away Final/Second Chance (second match at Home)
5 & 6 - 1st week Home Final/No second Chance
7 & 8 - 1st week Away Final/No second Chance

I live in WA so I get to see the AFL system first hand, it works a treat. You know what the result of each match means, and each match is promoted accordingly. None of this rediculous waiting until Sunday arvo to see if your still in, If your team is in the bottom 4 it's an Elimination Final, both teams playing for their survival. If your in the top 4, you have the chance to go straight into a Home Preliminary Final, these games are also great because they tend to throw caution to the wind as they have a second chance.
The NRL System is unfortunately a bit like Rugby Union, overthought and more complex than it need be.

Agree 100% and have so ever since the current system was introduced.

If all first week games were played simultaneously the current NRL McIntyre system would be much fairer. The draw for the following week would be immediately apparent and teams could concentrate on what's on the field rather than having half a mind on other games to come. The confusion and lack of transparency it generates as the weekend progresses outweighs any concept of fairness it holds IMO.
