With the passing of my 8th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, I was taken back to that special day as I am every year.
April 20th 1996 was the date. The ceremony went smoothly and we'd finished with the photos. We jumped in the limo to take a relatively long drive to the venue for the reception (the splendid function rooms at Newcastle Uni). We popped the bottle of champagne and I leaned over to turn on the TV. I went straight for the footy, and we drove to the Uni while watching the end of the Easts v Wests game, where we trounced the Maggies 20-0. I convinced my new bride that it was a sign: 20-0 victory on the 20th April (fairly weak I know).
The following day we flew out to Hamilton Island. The next game was v. Souths. Of course, I watched that game in it's entirety and we kicked butt - 62-0. So, for the first couple of weeks of my married life, the Roosters had not been scored against. In fact, they didn't lose again until June (that was the year we started with 10 in a row).
Was it inappropriate of me? Tell me your stories. Who else has done something similar?
I've got another couple of dilemmas coming. This Sunday, my mate is getting married and I'm the best man. It's a lunch time wedding and the reception should be finished by about 3:30-4:00. Obviously I'm not going to make the game (although it is only half an hour away and if I fake a serious illness at the right time, I can probably make it.....). It's about an hour drive from the venue to my place which means I'm going to have to wait until the Fox replay to see the game, but when I jump in the car, it'll still be going and I'm going to have to fight temptation to turn it on and listen to the end of the game.
OK, I'm resigned to missing that game, however, if (and this is a big IF) we make the GF, I could be in for another problem. My third (and final) child is due in early October. Would it be wrong to get a stand-in for the birth so I can go to the GF?
