did anyone watch it this week?

iw as told that morgan turinui said he hasn't ruled out playing for the nz maoris. wtf?

Greg Clark asked Turinui whether he would be prepared to play for the NZ Maori, as he is apparently qualified to do so. Turinui seemed to leave the door open to doing so.

I suppose this is because the NZ Maori are not a full international side, so overseas Maori can play for them by invitation, notwithstanding the fact that they play international rugby for another country. A bit like Barbarians games.

Yes but isn't the NZ Maori system a NZRFU system designed to promote Maori players to potential All Black status? In which case, its a no brainer and I don't think will be considered.

Isn't NZ Maori now just a polite name for NZ A? in any case it seems to have caught on with the RFU announcing England A will from now on be known as England Saxons and the proposed African Leopards scheme.

Does that mean that a kid who happens to be born in Australia to New Zealand Maori parents will never be able to play for NZ Maori?

That seems to be a bit restrictive?

Turinui puts hand up for Maori jersey
31 May 2006
By MARK GEENTY

SYDNEY: Waratahs rugby centre Morgan Turinui has labelled the New Zealand Maori a glorified invitation team - but he still wants to be on their mailing list.

The currently unwanted 20-test Wallaby, whose father Cameron is Maori, admitted the eligibility criteria for the side caused some mirth among the Waratahs who they play at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday night.

"We do laugh sometimes. (Lock) Paul Tito is a redhead and (former first five-eighth) Tony Brown is a five foot eight blonde, there's a few Samoan and Tongan descent players so I think it's more a New Zealand invitational team than anything," Turinui told Fox Sports.

"From a purely rugby perspective it makes them harder to play. It's a compliment to the Maori as a rugby team that people want to play for them."

Now, include Turinui on that list.

Born in Australia soon after his Hamilton-born father emigrated, Turinui, 24, has been mulling over the prospect of wearing the Maori jersey for the past year.

The question was put to him by reporters when he was in camp with the Wallabies a year ago, on the eve of the Maori's epic victory over the touring Lions in Hamilton.

Having played for his beloved Waratahs, the Wallabies and the Barbarians against the All Blacks, Turinui told NZPA yesterday the Maori jersey would complete his rugby experience.

"I'd love to play for NZ Maori one day. I'd definitely put my hand up. The opportunity to represent the people I'm descended from would be very special.

"I wouldn't leave the Waratahs but if it's a Maori team, an invitation team, then the ball's in their court. Whether they would accept me, I'm not sure."

Despite Friday's match having little riding on it - the beaten Super 14 semifinalists are without their current Wallabies except prop Al Baxter while the Maori only assembled this week and are bound for the Churchill Cup tournament in Canada and the US - Turinui expected plenty of passion.

He, loose forwards David Lyons and Stephen Hoiles and prop Matt Dunning, all have points to prove after missing the Wallabies' 33-man squad named on Monday.

"I know the boys are keen to face the haka - a lot of them haven't and it'll be special against the Maori. Only three of us have played the All Blacks before," Turinui said.

"They've got some outstanding rugby players and the Maori element is a bit like State of Origin in Australia; your ancestry, representing your family even more than playing for your province."

New Zealand Maori is for New Zealand Maori and if Turinui wants to play for the Maori then there is also an Australian Maori team that plays against Australian Samoan, Tongans etc .

No. You have to have Maori blood.

Tony Brown and Paul Tito definitely have Maori blood in them. It's not an invitational team, its not a NZ "A" side, its a product steeped in immense and powerful history and for anyone to suggest any different, as Morgan Turunui has is particularly narrow minded and rather insulting to the Maori people I'm sure.

Good to see them beat the Waratahs last night.

NZ Maori assistant coach Jamie Joseph says Waratahs centre Morgan Turinui has disgraced all Maori.

Turinui, a Maori himself, said before losing 20-16 to the New Zealand side at Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday night his opponents were a glorified invitational team.
He also questioned how red-headed Paul Tito and blonde Tony Brown could play for them.
Joseph said Turinui's comments hadn't been a distraction but thought he was out of line.
"I don't know Morgan. He's obviously been brought up in Australia and is ill informed," Joseph told Sunday News.
"It's unfortunate for him because with those comments he let not just our team down but Maori people back home.
"I'm Maori but my great grandfather was Scottish, my wife is New Zealand European and my children have European names and don't have brown skin. But that doesn't make them less Maori."
Meanwhile, Waikato coach Warren Gatland has rubbished reports linking him with the job of running England's entire international operation.
He told Sunday News: "I haven't heard anything about this, and it's not true at all.
"I'm still committed to Waikato and New Zealand.
"It's just typical of what comes out from over there."

i like what Matt Tepou said on Radio Sport a week ago. he could have chosen him or guys like Manny Edmonds he said even the QLD origin halfback Jonathan Thurston is of Maori Descent.

but he says that Turinui was born in australia and has eaten and enjoyed the fruits of australia's land therefore he should put back into the land that has fed him.

if that clown came to my Marae and looked at a few of the Kaumatua's he would see that not every Maori is dark skinned. i hope his Koro gives him a good kick in the arse for saying what he has. i bet his whanau in NZ will be pretty embarresed by what he said.
