Nothing says 'Japan vs Thailand' like Redfern Oval.

The match was a warm-up for the Cabramatta Nines yesterday, so it was logical to stage it in Sydney. Other posters stated earlier than there was a proposed Thailand vs Japan game in Asia for the Asia Cup last year, but Japan had to withdraw due to the match being staged in October, and players being unable to take leave from work due to Japanese people only getting limited annual leave per year.

Inner City Sydney is culturally diverse, with the accelerating increase in high-density residential development across suburbs like Redfern, Alexandria, Waterloo, Rosebery and Zetland seeing an influx of residents from a range of South East Asian backgrounds such as China, Korea, Japan, Thailand etc, so it was an appropriate venue. The vocal Thai contingent, chanting in Thai, created a good atmosphere. yesterday's Cabramatta Nines attracted the Thai Consular General as a visitor, so the games created good interest.

Staging games in Australia is no different to the IRB staging a host of tests involving Tier 2 nations in Colwyn Bay in North Wales last November, and soccer nations like Australia playing friendlies in London.

It's a big difference when they are using local players and not playing any matches in their home countries or seeing any legit development of any kind.

Thailand at least fielded a few locals for both 9s and the match against Japan.
They also sent a couple kids to Australia on a scholarship earlier from Thailand, but I don't know if they got in on any of the action.
If you look up their facebook (facebook(dot)com/pages/Thailand-Stars-RL/350692951700893) they have a team list for the 9s and for the Japan clash and they're players are sourced from Thai clubs and district level Australian clubs for the most part.

I have no idea about Japan,
I looked up their team list (ameblo(dot)jp/japanrugbyleague/entry-11761787826.html) and while there's only a couple anglo names there's no way of knowing what clubs they play for.

Quite a few experienced players there compared to Japan. Japan won the 2nd quarter, 2 tries to 1 and held them to only 2 tries when they put their best side back on.

There's only 2 teams here in Japan.
Players either come from those or joined just for the tour from the open trials.
That's why some of them have never played before. And will most likely go back to their union clubs now.

It was also great to see the game referreed entirely by women. Maybe we'll see our first female adjudicate an NRL game this year.

thailand stars v Japan is the rlif/asian cup linked group run by Andrew Charles from what Ive read.

TRL is a "rebel" group who played "Greece A".

Mate your spot on. The reason they don't play each other is because there isn't enough players for both teams. Most guys have played for both. The trl is run by a deluded character who I'd rather not name. He claims to be the official governing body of rl in thailand when in fact there is not and will not be an official body until the criteria set out by the rlif is met. He spends most of his time trying to undermine the work done by the Thailand stars group by buying web domains and any thing else he can to gain leverage off the work already done by others. Good luck to him, but if he spent half as much time trying to be beneficial for the game as he is detrimental Then this discussion would not be happening. It seems his motivation is financial gain this is why I call him deluded, I happen to know first hand he was seeking up to 32,000 aud for franchises before a ball had been kicked in Thailand. Only a fool would pay that sort of money for something that doesn't even exist yet. To all those interested there is a guaranteed event in Phuket this October run by the Thailand stars and hosed by the Phuket cobras(nothing to do with thailandstars.com) or (phuketcobras.com) both which redirect to the mad blokes web site. Because the numbers aren't there. Would be great if that was an option but most guys have turned out for both.

Search for Thailand stars rl on Facebook and thailandrugbyleague.com for information on Thailand stars. To date they gave played the Philippines twice both home and away plus the match in redfern against japan. Not as stupid as it sounds considering that Thai is the 3rd most spoken foreign language in Sydney behind mandarin and Cantonese.

The boys are also plying Latin heat on July 1 in Windsor Sydney. Apart from the Greece game run by the other mob they've done nothing. That match would never have gone ahead without the support of the stars as they needed their players to fill the numbers. Most of his players have now jumped ship because they want to play. Something the stars have been able to deliver on. They lads all have a great bond and they are ever improving.

FWIW the TRL website and Facebook page claims that they have a match scheduled against Norway in October, and will be starting a 4-team league soon after that. They also have pictures of some sort of 'coaching clinics' in various Thai regions. Although some of the text and content would seem to back up some of what the poster above is saying.

So I take it then evil homer that you have checked out the thailandrugbyleague.com web site and have also checked out the line ups for both the TRL rugby 13 v Greece and the Thailand stars v japan. So you have noticed that both squads are quite similar. Most of which will be lining up again on Sunday the 1st of June for the stars as they take on Latin heat.

As I'm currently new hear and haven't made 20 posts I'm unable to post links so if encourage anybody who is interested to search for the Thailand stars rugby league on Facebook or the phuket cobras also on Facebook where there are posts about the match v the heat to be live steamed and info about the phuket 9's this October.

The coaching clinic you referred to was held in chiang Mai and was most school kids hardly ready of taking on Norway but still great to see them getting a piece of the 13 a side game never the less. FYI there was supposed to be another clinic in phuket which was cancelled as the TRL claim they had problems with flight connections. Would have been nice of them to inform the people who helped on the ground in phuket via phone or some sort of other personal communication rather than just posting on Facebook.
