Neither.

Sunshine, even with it's weak third act it still beats 'oh look Matt Damon is going to f**k everyone over here'.

Interstellar, by a fair margin.
I still did like Contact though.

And I'll throw in another shout-out for Sunshine as well.

Event Horizon ftw. Interstellar even stole it's explanation of how a wormhole works using a piece of paper from it.

Sunshine and Event Horizon both good movies.

Haven't seen Interstellar but enjoyed Contact even though it had some frustrating moments.

Interstellar by a huge margin.

Interesting that both of these films (plus some11's Sunshine recommendation) are all films marred by a contentious third act.

Are we incapable of making hard science fiction without a shitty resolution?

Good point. Sunshine especially with the way it turns into a slasher flick.

Interstellar suffers from being too sentimental with the whole love transcends the physics of the universe etc

I don't really remember Contact, haven't seen it in years.

I personally really enjoy all four of the similar themed movies mentioned.

Interstellar - The most visually impressive but found the final act a bit too out there. The 'other worlds' were a bit disappointing too.
Event Horizon - Ahead of its time and underrated, one of the few genuine space horrors. To think that huge chunks were cut out because of squeamish test audiences.
Sunshine - Brilliant set-up and asked thought provoking questions. I thought the twist concept was great but it just couldn't pull off the final act.
Contact - Less about the visuals but had a satisfying pay-off despite overcooked a bit in getting there.

I find it hard to separate the four, they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Probably the only other one to throw in the mix is Gravity, that gets a pass in the resolution box.

I also think Gravity is a much more refined film overall thanks to Alfonso Cuarón's technical ability, compared to Nolan's formula which is really starting to feel stale with each one he makes. The outside shots of the ship in Interstellar look like someone dangling a papier-mache piece in front of a camera which ruined the immersion for me.

I quite liked Gravity, although it's a much more grounded film than the others being discussed. It's essentially contemporary, whereas the others ask the viewer to make some pretty big leaps as far as the technology being discussed.

I had no problems with the third acts of either film.
Interstellar I especially liked the ending. The only problem I had with that film was the Matt Damon tries to kill them part, but even that was explained well enough that I could live with it.
