Tweed Heads Gains and Losses

A late-season surge was not enough to get the Redcliffe Dolphins into the finals in season 2015, but the powerhouse club will be aiming to feature in September in 2016.

They have also picked up two handy graduates of the NYC competition, with Brayden Torpy (Gold Coast) and Cowboy Akeripa Tia Kilifi (brother of Pride forward Vaipuna) joining the side.

Lock Andrew Niemoeller comes to the Blackhawks following a stellar season in which he was named NYC Player of the Year.

The Queensland Under 18 and Under 20 Representative played his junior rugby league for the Norths Devils before signing with the Cowboys as a scholarship player and eventually going on to captain the NYC side in 2015.

Burleigh Bears Gains and Losses

The Burleigh Bears welcomed a returning favourite, some new but experienced faces and plenty of young guns when they kicked off their pre-season training last week.

Front-rower Luke Page returns to the Bears after making his NRL debut while they will also get the full-time services of former Titans Jamie Dowling and Chad Redman.

Coach Jim Lenihan is hoping the mixture of players with fulltime experience and enthusiastic youngsters will hopefully breed results for the Bears in 2016.
The process of taking star players from the Colts and Under 19 / Under 20 and developing them into long-term Cup players has been underway for some time, with the debut of many players last season evidence of that.

The promotion of more young, local talent is set to continue in 2016 as the Bears look to build their long-term future.

The Bears Colts success has also seen seven of the team progress to the NYC. Talor Walters, Jack Cook, Dylan Pelo, Daymeric Pelo, Mitch Doring, Sam Ross (all Storm NYC), Jenan Parrish (Cronulla NYC) and Maia Sands (South Sydney NYC) have all earned contracts after successful seasons.

Thoughts
- Burleigh probably have the best gains out of anyone, but they've lost their best three players in Wells, Jacks and Seluini so it balances out
- I would be extremely surprised if Townsville didn't win next year, their squad is pretty crazy. They have also signed Willie Minoga from PNG
- Ipswich have lost too many players, I don't think they will make the finals next year
- Redcliffe and Sunny Coast should both be up there next year

Isreal Eliab is a huge loss for PNG.

Not sure why none of the NRL Clubs have given him a trail. Hope he doesn't get homesick in London.

Old friend re-joins Capras

The Rockhampton Leagues Club Capras welcomed an old friend to Rockhampton recently in the form of Lance Kuveu.

Kuveu was called on by the Capras earlier in the year when the side travelled to PNG to play the Hunters; but injuries, illness and passport issues meant the Capras struggled to field a full team and were forced to recruit two players out of the local league onto their bench.

Kuveu – who was playing in the Digicel Cup for the Agmark Gurias at the time along with Clement Kilingelat – stepped in to help out the undermanned Capras.

Kuveu went on to score the only try for the Capras in that game against the Hunters and received the biggest cheer of the day from the PNG crowd.

The Capras saw enough in Kuveu to offer him a contract for the 2016 season, making him the first player recruited from the Digicel Cup into the Intrust Super Cup (outside the players participating in the PNG Hunters program).

Kuveu knows it will be step learning curve and lots of hard work, but is thankful for the opportunity given by the Capras to pursue his dream of playing in the Intrust Super Cup.
