Its not since 1996 that the Scottish have beaten the Irish, but yesterday afternoon at Old Anniesland in Glasgow, the Bravehearts went very close, losing to the Wolfhounds in the final seconds of the game thanks to a Karl Fitzpatrick try which put the visitors up 24 – 22.

The opening quarter of the game was all Scotland’s with the home side up 12 – 2 after just 21 minutes thanks two tries from full-back Lee Penny. Jon Duffy added the extras and the match looked like it would go to the men in blue. The Irish needed someone to step up to keep themselves in the match, and it came none better than captain Phil Cantillon, in his debut match for the emerald isle scoring just before half time, together with second rower James King to bring the scores level as both teams went into the break.

Ireland started the second half the better team, taking the lead in the 52nd minute when substitute Karl Fitzpatrick ran on and collected his first try. Scotland hit back with a double through Danny Arnold and Jason Roach to take the lead and almost take the game…That was until Fitzpatrick collected his second try in the final minute of the match.

The game was a thrilling encounter, and just the thing Rugby League wanted to kick off its inaugural European Nations Cup. There was a lot of pride and passion shown by both outfits, and unfortunately in the end there could only be one winner.

Fantastic to see Salfords academy half Karl Fitzpatrick come on and change the game for Ireland, hope he gets a run in SL next year with Salford.

Does anyone have any crowd figures or attendance information?

Did any of the amatuer players get a run with either Scotland or Ireland
?
