Is Reefy on to something?

In another thread, I noticed a comment from Reefy that made me curious. He said that the dogs weren't that much to worry about as long as we protect the ball carrying arm. I went and had a look at the tape of the Eels_Dogs game and he is dead right. They do spear in for that arm, which is very good coaching. I hope Stuey noticed this also!

Well done Reefy.

Food for thought alright. R U saying they are stripping the ball in one on one tackles? Surely in two man tackles when they target the 'ball carrying arm' they risk being penalised for stripping. No tryng to be smart but just about all tackles are at least two men.

You can't be pinned for stripping if it is judged as part of the tackle. It is ingenius from Folkes and we will hear more about it through the course of this year, much the same as the 2002 'Rooster' rule.

All credit to Reefy for picking up on it.

Well done Reefy and good pick up. Let's hope Stuey reads these forum pages.

But isn't one of our problems catching the football? I think we need to worry about that, and making tackles, before worrying about players targeting the ball carrying arm.

As I've seen it they do it two ways 1. they do it from a front on tackle and just aim their shoulder for the arm carrying the ball or just under it (extremely effective) 2. This one can be penalised but barely does, its pretty much a swinging arm but instead of going for the head they aim at the ball (shouldnt be to hard as long as the ball carrier has the ball secured).

I've always thought Blacktip was a pretty astute judge as far as RL goes. That's why I picked him as coach of that imaginary Forum Team a few days ago.
My only reservation was his previous psychotic resentments against Anderson.
Now Anderson's gone, I hope Raper succeeds. Although it certainly didn't appear that way last Saturday night. I hope Blacktip's right about us knocking off the Dogs this Saturday night. I can't see it myself but I'm sure hoping for it.

Not like you to not give credit where it's due Millers... and I thought you were the objective type. If you already knew about it and it was so obvious, why wasn't it discussed on here before. Go watch the Dogs-Eels game again, it is a very deliberate tactic that I don't think many clubs place alot of emphasis on. The Sharks would do well to follow suit. Even if the ball doesn't come loose you get your defenders hitting the runners hard and that is what's needed, a bit of hard hitting.

I read the title of the thread and thought it may have been about the yoga classes.
Prime (channel 7) showed a snippet of the Sharks doing yoga classes.
I thought BTR may have been involved somewhere.

What did the instructor look like?

& the tactic is second man in "missile". It is not new, but I've never seen it so deliberate or consistent.
the Warriors may have big problems.

Thats the bit that is new! It is very effective too. The Sharks should be doing it now before everyone starts, and they will.

To be honest I didnt take any notice of the instructor BTR.
I was interested to see if any of the guys stuffed up (when I used to play we did aerobics and I was so far out of sync it wasn't funny).
I dont know anything about yoga but they looked the part.

I agree the advantage of us doing it would be the hitting tackling it would demand. I still think that despite the kilometres of opinions writtne about flat attack vs deep attack at the height? depth? of the Ando war, our defecne got worse and worse and that's what was our chronic weak point. In fact, I reckon it has always been our weak point. Some years better than others but always a brittleness that at best had us playing that crucial game at the wrong end of the park or saw us so stuffed from defending on the backpeddle that we ran out of juice and out of the comp at the critical point. As far as I am concerned, that is the critical factor that we need to fix if we are ever going to win it. So, if it comes through targetting the ball with shoulder hits, so much the better. Does anyone agree with me or am I just smokin' it?

Yeah I'm with you.
However, that perceived brittleness had little to do with styles. More like player strength.
& the reason we were at the wrong end of the park was poor kicking.
We need 5 years of specials teams coaching our kickers from A to Z

Defense is the most important part of the game IMO. It sorely need to improve for us this year. It was pretty hard to tell if it had last Saturday due to the woeful performance put in by the tigers. We still let in two soft tries, so it can't be heralded too much. I really hope we don't miss the boat on this one.
