Is RL failing its players to deliver the dollars?

RL was born to give its players a fairer share of the action from big games.

when RU was around, massive amounts of money was generated by big rep, games but it went to the bosses of the game rather than the players.

they rebelled and set up RL to get a fairer share.

so is what is happening today the same thing.

they certainly arent getting a share of the millions origins and finals series generate. they arent getting the massive salaries their talents deserve because we have poor TV deals.

so is the problem the failure of the games leadership to properly reward its stars?

its 3 years till the next tv deal gets done, do we just sit around and keep losing players till then?

can the nrl go back to its TV partners and say it needs additional funds to keep the stars that deliver those ratings.

if 9 and fox chipped into $20 million each, this could go into a fighting fund to keep them.

or is it better players leave, but we ensure clubs are financially stable and the salary cap says strong to provide an even competition?

The 'broadcast partners' would argue that they are happy with the ratings and how much they are paying for them and will tender another bid when the current contract expires.

We won't be able to break our contract.

You could make the Salary cap 100 million. You could give the players 50% of the revenue. They will always want more because it is not about how much a player is earning, it is about how much more they are earning than other players that is the important thing in their eyes.

And with players punching on with patons at night spots or p*ssing on people in pubs, the sponsors arent exactly going to be lining up to throw money at these morons.

Does anyone know if the any of the NRL tv rights deal is based on the performance of the game as far as ratings, advertising revenue etc goes?

Considering the comments from the Foxsports exec on pay tv deals been based on growth and not ratings, it would seem like a massive oversight to not have a deal structured around this fact. If we had a deal like that in place then we would not have to sit around crying poor while we wait for the next one to come around.

If Rugby League weren't on Fox, I reckon you could just about write off 60 - 70% of subscriptions in NSW and QLD. The rest of the Fox content is Sh!t!

But it is isn't it and it isn't going to be shown anywhere but fox for a fair while.

There is no way the NRL will be able to compete on player salaries with Europe. When you take into account the exchange rate we will always be behind. Plus doesn't a lot of the millions earned by rep games go towards juniors and grassroots development ?

TBf most businesses have an expenditure of around 70-80% on salaries. In the NRL we have clubs on an income of $15-20 mill and a players wage bill of less than 30%. Clubs need to look at where they are spending money and improve business so more of their income can go to the salary cap.

Won't solve the RU issue which we will never compete with, and is a small part of the problem, but will stop the drain to ESL.

Poor managment by clubs for decades has pushed them into this corner, that's the bottom line. If the clubs had done more over the years than just sit back and enjoy the pokie money we may have seen more Union stars playing RL than the current trend suggests.

Here's an alternative idea for a thread title, covering the same issue:

"Are RL players failing to deliver their commitments due to personal greed?"

union is paying $1 - $1.5 million for our top players.

we are paying $500,000 - $700,000 for them.

so its not like we need to pay lots more.

a salary cap of $6 million plus would do the business fine with top players able to get $1.5 million plus

If ESL clubs can pay out 50% of the clubs income on first team salaries why can't NRL clubs?

What is your plan for the cap to be 6 million?

Show Foxsports and Channel 9 the ratings they get from it.

and also news Ltd out of RL.

why does AFL get more money for less TV ratings?

they get $90 million more per year and deliver lower ratings.

$90 million / 16 clubs = 5.625 million a club extra
Which would actually take the salary cap to close to $10 million

but of course RL cant get the same as AFL even though the ratings are higher due to the control of news ltd

Its stuck in place Dally untik 2012 with the TV deal. So between now and then, there will be no extra money from ch9 or fox.

and whats going to change in 2012 with news ltd still there.

at least if we get them out early it will be a start.

and if i were gallop id be going to both and asking for more money to keep the players that give them those ratings.

Does there have to be Pay and FTA rights? Couldnt we theoretically sell all games to FTA, across multiple channels?

And who is going to buy it? Sports need Pay TV to push the price up, the AFL would not have gotten the deal without they did without the assistance of Foxtel, same with NRL.
