Is the 3rd man in rule a joke???

We've seen it a few times this year, players getting put in the bin and in a few cases even suspended  merely for being the 3rd man to a blue or being the 3rd person to throw a punch.
I understand utilising the rule for cases where someone comes racing in and throws a big haymaker or a king hit, but IMO the application of the rule by refs has become a JOKE.
Tonight both Kennedy and in a worse example lil' Georgie Carmont got binned for having the misfortune of being first on the scene. In Carmonts case what was he to do?? Stand around while Burns threw punches at a guy on his back? And in Kennedys case Manly get penalised a man when the games on the line while Buderus stays on the field, although its a big call to send Buderus to the showers is it not more ridiculous to put Kennedy in the bin?

Surely some discretion should be used by refs and surely theres more important things to focus on. Thoughts?????

The ref was extremely oppressive with the binnings tonight. Silly silly stuff.

Yeah its a joke the rule, but based on consistancy Carmont will cop a week for that, just as Weyman and Utai did.

if Carmont goes for that I will LOL. No way.

Smith is in trouble. Buderus is in trouble, Simpson looks like tape is the only thing holding his shoulder in place... I bet a lot of teams would like to meet them next week.

I'd love to play them, which we would be if we lose and the Storm and Broncos win, however i'd rather have the week off to get our injuries right. And Carmont should get suspended because Utai and Weyman did for similar incidents.

I thought the ref got it exactly right with Buderus on report and Kennedy in the bin.

Kennedys was an each way thing. Just saw the highlights on Sports
Tonight and in the Travis Burns/Carmont binning Chris Hicks is actually 3rd man in, Carmont and a few others arrive next and shape up but nobody actually throws a punch. So how does a guy who doesnt throw a punch get sin binned???

I thought Carmont was actually trying to split them up? He didn't throw any? What was he binned for?

I can understand Bk's binning though.

The third man in rule is totally stupid. He'll come in, maybe even try to split it up and cop one and retaliate, yet the two gooses who started off the brawl get off scott free. "It's been a good game up until now, go back and tell your players to calm down, but this man came in from 8 metres away, he's going to the bin ok - penalty though goes the other way."

What?

fair enough about the 3rd man rule being stupid

BUT what Ben did WAS stupid.

The tackle by danny was bad enough (he will get suspended)

Ben could have injured his own player more by bloody jumping on him???
what if he had a neck injury?

There is no such thing as "3rd man in" rule.

The referee determined that BK committed an act of misconduct.

Sec. 16
Power to dismiss
6.
In the event of misconduct by a player, the Referee
shall, at his discretion, caution, temporarily suspend
for ten minutes, or dismiss the offender.

SECTION 15
PLAYER’S MISCONDUCT
Definition of misconduct
1.
A player is guilty of misconduct if he:
(a) trips, kicks or strikes another player.
(b) when effecting or attempting to effect a tackle
makes contact with the head or neck of an
opponent intentionally, recklessly or carelessly.
(c) drops knees first on to an opponent who is on the
ground
(d) uses any dangerous throw when effecting a
tackle.
(e) deliberately and continuously breaks the Laws of
the Game.
(f) uses offensive or obscene language.
(g) disputes a decision of the Referee or Touch
Judge.
(h) re-enters the field of play without the permission
of the Referee or a Touch Judge having
previously temporarily retired from the game.
(i) behaves in any way contrary to the true spirit of
the game.
(j) deliberately obstructs an opponent who is not in
possession.

(d) uses any dangerous throw when effecting a
tackle.

no problem with that form of misconduct then in terms of a player staying on the field
