Is the comp less even now than it was before?

After seeing people continually comment about the quality of the comp I crunched some numbers.

I looked at the Top 5 and Bottom 5 for the last 3 years and compared it to 81, 82, 83 and 86 for the following:

• % wins
• For and against ratio

Looks like the gap between the Top 5 and bottom 5 teams has widened signifcantly. Maybe its too early to include 2021 but I'm not sure we'll see a lot of change.

So - how did it end up like this? Wasn't the salary cap meant to even out the competition?

I think it's about the lack of randomness in the modern game. Rules that reward consistent, low-risk footy allow an advantage to scale (or compound) more over eighty minutes than they used to.

I think the competition is just creating a bigger division between the well run clubs and the poorly run clubs.

I think the whole "not having enough talent" is garbage.

In my professional life I don't sit around each day whinging about the lack of talent...

It is the clubs job to work with what they have in terms of recruitment and production of talent with the best systems in place to give them the best possible chance of being successful.

It is not a coincidence the clubs with the best front office's, resources, culture and systems are the ones maintaining heightened levels of success for longer periods of time.

I think the comparison years aren’t the best bases. The lower level of professionalism in the early 80s meant player salary concerns weren’t as large a driver for player movement as they are now (or even more so in the mid-late 90s) and then even when they were the talent divide between the money chaser and his replacement often wasn’t drastic

Possibly. I wanted to do it to see how even the comps were when we won them.
