The mid-90s, when both Origin teams were made up of players from the same four clubs.
After seeing people continually comment about the quality of the comp I crunched some numbers.
I looked at the Top 5 and Bottom 5 for the last 3 years and compared it to 81, 82, 83 and 86 for the following:
Looks like the gap between the Top 5 and bottom 5 teams has widened signifcantly. Maybe its too early to include 2021 but I'm not sure we'll see a lot of change.
- % wins
- For and against ratio
So - how did it end up like this? Wasn't the salary cap meant to even out the competition?

During the period where origin representation was least spread out amongst teams (mid 90s) we saw some of the greatest imbalances between the bottom 5 and the top 5.It's because of third party rorts, origin disruption, and teams don't play each other twice (home and away) as they should in a proper comp.
Fix these 3 problems and you will get an even comp.
But there was no salary cap then.....During the period where origin representation was least spread out amongst teams (mid 90s) we saw some of the greatest imbalances between the bottom 5 and the top 5.
2020 had no origin disruption and is also statistically one of the most unbalanced. But there was no salary cap then.....

I see Origin as a chance for the bottom teams to jag a win and get closer to the the top teams given they are less likely to be impacted.
Take that away and I'd say the gap would almost certainly widen.
Third party sponsorships and player endorsements are too hard to track based on publicly available information. It’s why the NRL does audits.Your absolutely correct for once.
The last season was unbalanced due to not having the origin in the middle of the season and manipulate the even'ness.
The nrl have been nicely controlling the even'ness of the competition for a long time now, and the biggest weapon in the arsenal was the origin period and pairing teams that would normally not have a chance against the top teams.
If you want to look at stats, have a look at how many clubs in the past 20 years have won premierships or made the GF, and then have a look at the clubs with the most third party sponsors????
Please tell me what your stats conclude?
Your absolutely correct for once.
Send the Sharks to Redcliffe.Time for the dog shit teams to either merge or relocate. Penrith to Perth for example.
That would make the Dolphins nervous.Send the Sharks to Redcliffe.
It's simple. Scrap third party payments. They do nothing but help a few clubs with high connectionsThird party sponsorships and player endorsements are too hard to track based on publicly available information. It’s why the NRL does audits.
Too hard to police... And even if you could, who will police the police? The Coastguard? It's simple. Scrap third party payments. They do nothing but help a few clubs with high connections
