Is the comp less even now than it was before?

After seeing people continually comment about the quality of the comp I crunched some numbers.

I looked at the Top 5 and Bottom 5 for the last 3 years and compared it to 81, 82, 83 and 86 for the following:
  • % wins
  • For and against ratio
Looks like the gap between the Top 5 and bottom 5 teams has widened signifcantly. Maybe its too early to include 2021 but I'm not sure we'll see a lot of change.

So - how did it end up like this? Wasn't the salary cap meant to even out the competition?

The player draft would have been good.

It's because of third party rorts, origin disruption, and teams don't play each other twice (home and away) as they should in a proper comp.

Fix these 3 problems and you will get an even comp.

During the period where origin representation was least spread out amongst teams (mid 90s) we saw some of the greatest imbalances between the bottom 5 and the top 5.

2020 had no origin disruption and is also statistically one of the most unbalanced.

I see Origin as a chance for the bottom teams to jag a win and get closer to the the top teams given they are less likely to be impacted.

Take that away and I'd say the gap would almost certainly widen.

Your absolutely correct for once.

The last season was unbalanced due to not having the origin in the middle of the season and manipulate the even'ness.

The nrl have been nicely controlling the even'ness of the competition for a long time now, and the biggest weapon in the arsenal was the origin period and pairing teams that would normally not have a chance against the top teams.

If you want to look at stats, have a look at how many clubs in the past 20 years have won premierships or made the GF, and then have a look at the clubs with the most third party sponsors????

Please tell me what your stats conclude?

Third party sponsorships and player endorsements are too hard to track based on publicly available information. It’s why the NRL does audits.

F**k even. As a Parra fan, who wants an even comp? What has that done for us the last 35+ years?

I like the fact that we are 1 of only 5 or 6 clubs that has a realistic chance of winning the comp and that currently there are no standout GOATS to thwart us. Much better then 1 in 16.

Oh, BTW the new rules are the reason as to why the lesser quality clubs are being hammered more pronouncedly. It has exposed the difference between the good teams and the bad much more due to the bad teams lack of ability in regaining the momentum once they lose it to the better teams.

The extra wrestle in the game before masked this difference significantly. Now that there is basically no wrestle, the crap teams are cactus if the better teams hold on to the ball and/or use it to its fullest.

I like that this has happened, because now maybe the crappy run teams may be forced to improve the junior development systems or be consigned to perpetual bottom of the ladder oblivion. That can only be a benefit in the long run for the game.

Go Parra!

It's simple. Scrap third party payments. They do nothing but help a few clubs with high connections

Yep, limit the ability of players to earn whilst promoting themselves and the game would be best for all concerned.

Or, you could just police the shit properly, and make sure that third party payments were made by actual third parties and the players receiving them had to do something of a reasonable value in return for said payments.
