Is this the end for Slater?

A magnificent player in his prime, his grubby behaviour and salary cap indiscretions will taint his legacy but easily one of the best fullbacks to have played the game

In any other place but this forum - no they won't. Seriously, no one outside the inner uber-fan circle remembers or gives a shit about that stuff.

Never nice to see someone go out via injury.

That said, he is still a dirty (unt of a player and can go f**k himself.

LEGEND!
Whatever he decides...
There's not many players who get to have a run like him and play like he plays - most would admit to it and who would not have him in their team if the could through the years?
For a long time he has done as much as anyone and more than most to promote RL and draw kids to the game & is one of the all-time nice guys no matter how much some try to imply otherwise.
Absolute bloody Legend!

Wasn't into league when Mini was cut down by injury but Slater has earned the right to at least go out on his own terms like Mini did.

Does it seem like a similar situation?

In some ways, yes. Mini had a terrible run with injury between 2006 and 2009, but in his favour, he was just 30 when he beat his back injury for good and had 5 more seasons in the NRL.

Slater will be out all season, and will turn 34 in 2017. It's long odds as I see it for him to regain a spot in the long term like the Count did.

i'm positive he'll play on next year

the question should be, will we ever see billy slater near his best again and the answer to that is most likely no

Would love for him to play one more season, only so he can go out on his own terms. Not being forced into it by injury.

Good thing we have a more than capable replacement in Munster though.

Probably right about the cap stuff, I reckon his grubbery is a bit more well-known amongst a wider circle of opposition fans.

And NSW fans probably amplify it, because he's terrorised us since, what, 2003?

I hope it's not the end of his career. But if it is then I feel privileged to have seen the greatest player ever to play the game.

Should be a lock in for the next Immortal.
After Mick Innes?
Billy has been a great player but his best years have probably passed.

I think he should give it away... but this is a bloke who moved heaven and earth to play in the WC final with a dodgy knee. Expect him to come back next year and rip shit up

He's an old, and now injury prone man in a young man's position. He's done. Even if he does come back, he'll never be the same again.

Time will tell - I wouldn't bet against him. TBH if he makes the comeback I think he'll be the same - shoulder isn't like a knee that will hamper him consistently - the question is whether it will take the knocks - my guess is if he comes back he'll be fine until/unless the shoulder goes again - he'll be getting advice on that, but walking away on his own terms will be his preference I am sure

I would love Billy to come back next season and play so we can get to see OUR CHAMPION play again. He has given us so many highlights over his career and I feel so privileged to be able to watch him play. Billy always makes time for the kids at a game and at his Billy`s buddy Clinics.

It certainly looks that way.

I mean, he's 44 and looks disinterested in marginal conditions. Once upon a time he would have been unbeatable on snappers workable walls but he looked sluggish, that board was all wrong and he fully deserved that round 3 exit against a rookie.

His legacy is untouchable with 11 world titles but Father Time catches up with us all.

I hope he does come back for at least one or two more years, just so he can get to 300 games (I think he needs around 22 more). He was seriously never going to get the try scoring record but it would be good for him to reach one more milestone in his career (he could also get to 30 origin games).
